I returned two Lionel Thomas Remote O gauge train sets because they did not respond to commands. I am keeping the third replacement because it at least goes forward and reverse. The chuff off switch does not work. I also found the worm gear had no grease. The grease was on the chassis. They aimed the grease squirt wrong. I suggest you only buy from a dealer that tests it in front of you before you take it out of the store.
The slot for these switches is too small to allow the slide to move all the way it needs to move. The fix is to carefully file away some of the plastic from the switch slot.

I had a similar problem with my 11000 Holiday Tradition Express. I cleaned the track with an eraser (pencil-type) and then used a soft cloth to clean any possible residue. After doing this twice, my train is now running.

There is no on/off switch. Remote will give no indication of working. Try putting engine and coal car only and try. I have had this train set for two years and the remote tends to work whenever it wants.

The wires will have pulled off the circuit board inside.
Remove screws (force a hex driver in there) and solder wire back on.
Train surgey (geddit) is very fiddly. Have a drink first! ;-)
