OK these are my favorite there at at least a half a dozen possible problems
most apparent the hard drive shot it's wad
but hey there is light cf adapters and a cf card are way cheaper than a replacement hard drive oor sending to apple
oor you can get adventerios (like cheerios but different)
it could just be the harddrive being a wuss try (i know this sounds bad but what have you got to lose)hitting the ipod with the top while it is pointing down
why you ask the hard drive could just be lose (it has happened to mine twice)(go figure?)
and you can still force disk mode wether or not it will help it probably won't but you can try restoring it with itunes (might work or not if the hard drive is ka put)
and if you have any question or concerns i will try to help

SOURCE: I've a A1059 Ipod Model.
In many cases, the 20gb Classic and Photo models have problems with the Hard Drive. I have found over time, if you open the iPod, and remove the hard drive from the cable, remove the cable from the board and assemble it back together in reverse the problem will go away. The ipod cables tend to seat and don't make good contact.
to open your ipod, lay it on it's metal back, slide a guitar pick down the side between the metal case and the plastic front. slide it up and down the length of the ipod.do the same to the top and bottom. it should pop open. Up near the headphone jack and switch the is a cable attached, be careful not to open the ipod to fast, use a guitar pick to pry up the cable from the mother board and that will expose the inside. Now to remove the hard drive hold the black tab on the hard drive cable and pull the hard drive free straight back from the cable. To free the cable from the motherboard, lift the black lever clip up and open. now look at the cable end. If it is v shaped, straighten it and reinsert it in the motherboard and puc the black clip flat again. reassemble the ipod and give it a try.

Welcome to Fixya!
iPod battery can drain over time. Extreme cold or heat can adversely affect the battery.
What to do?
Replace the lithium ion battery. There are many online stores that sells the iPod battery kit. It includes the battery and the tools you will need. The installation is easy but you need to be careful.
Here is a video on replacing an iPod battery.
Hope this helps you. Please feel free to come back if you need further assistance.
Thank you for using Fixya!
