The contacts in the USB connector and the PC weaken with age and can have a film present. Since the USB voltage and amperage are quite low these conditions can affect the operation of the trackball.
Use a q-tip swab dampened with a LITTLE denatured alcohol to clean the contacts. Then use the end of a straightened paper clip to rub GENTLY back and forth across the contacts. On the PC BE CERTAIN TO TURN OFF THE POWER first. It is actually better to unplug the power cord from the PC or wall outlet and then press the power button for about 5 seconds to drain any residual electricity.
