SOURCE: Did I just fry my WD External?

Hi,

I've done something similiar and I know the feeling, but the good news is that you may not of done the damage you think. Here's what I suggest. Go to this link. Where they will explain the differences of the meanings of the flashing lights. There are so many variables, that it would be to difficult to figure out unless I was actually working on the disk itself. But the page is very easy to understand, and hopefully you'll find what I did, was all I need to do was to power down and up again.

Good Luck!

SOURCE: Elements by WD, AC Adapter Failed

There are replacement models for this 5V/1.5A power supply that the AD6008 uses.

One of them is made by a company called "Asian Power Devices" [APD] and their model number for the replacement for this particular unit is: DA-30C01.

I've seen them for sale on www.amazon.com for around $25.00.

How can I get a replacement power supply?

What you are after is an AC adapter this model I found on ebay has 120 volts to 240 volts to 12 volts make sure the DC voltage output matches the Voltage of your hard drive. The current output has to be the same amount or larger in value. So if your drive needs 2A a 2A or larger value means it can handle the current load put on it by the Hard drive.

My toshiba 1 Tb automatic backup portable drive won't power up

First you will need to check the AC adapter if there is DC power available. Use a DC voltmeter and put the black lead on the outer ring and red lead on the center pin of the connector that plugs into the external drive, Plug the AC adapter in the wall and see if you have voltage on the meter. Should be roughly 12 VDC. If you do not have voltage then the circuit board inside the external case is failed, if no voltage then replace the AC adapter. As a last resort out can disassemble the case and use the hard drive as an internal one.

I have the Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 250GB External Hard Drive. I have moved and lost the power cord. I purchased the DYNEX 500ma Universal AC Adapter as a replacement. When I plug the...

I don't have a photo of the AC adapter, but if you look on it the Voltage and Amperage specifications are;

Input: 100-240VAC / 50~60Hz
Output: 12VDC / 2A

This means the Input power can be from 100 volts to 240 Volts AC, and at 50 to 60 Hertz

The Output power is 12 Volts DC at no more than 2 Amp's. (Amperes)

Asian Power Devices Inc. has a model DA-24B12 that fits these specs.
Also a Wattac AC adapter model number - BAO362Zl-8-A01 will work.

Otherwise just use a 12 Volt, 2 Amp power pack, with a positive on center contact, and a 2mm pin hole

Hi,

Most externals are 12v input voltage so as long as you have a adapter with this input voltage your be fine, and the hard drive should operate.

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

The 5v power pin on the AC adapter of my SmartDisk Crossfire external hard drive has been broken. How do I get a replacement AC Adapter?

Take your SmartDisk to any computer-store.

They can open the case, remove the disk-drive,
and mount the disk-drive in a new "empty" external casing,
with a new power-supply.
See: http://www.canadaram.com/3_5_sata_enclosures.htm
for a sample of various "empty" cases, for about $30.
