I contacted the AT&T tech support person:
Sara Paige: Hello and welcome to the AT&T Technical Support Chat. My name is Sara Paige.
ME: my Blackberry Bold is running really slow and every few seconds or so there is a little black box come up in the middle of the screen like it is thinking? Can u help?
ME: all weekend it was running really slow, for 2 days straight, would you be able to explain the cause of this?
Sara Paige: how often do you power your phone off?
ME: very rarely
Sara Paige: we ask that you power your phone off and then back on everyday because we are always sending downloads to the phone and by doing this then you will also keep a fresh registration.
ME: how long should i power off my phone for?
Sara Paige: Just a couple of mintues.
ME: okay great, thank you.
