Question about Cameras
You neglected to specify the make and model of your camera so I'm assuming it uses a memory card of some type.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

SOURCE: unable to download my pictures
camera not selected or detected?
If it's camera not detected try checking to make sure that there isn't any programs in the background that's taking control of the camera. One of the most common programs is Adobe download mamager

Sounds like you didn't use the "safely remove hardware" function when you disconnected the camera the last time and now it is corrupted. You can still download the pics if you use a separate card reader.

SOURCE: i just got my camera
Sounds odd - working one day then NOT the next day.
When you downloaded the pictures - did you delete the originals from the card ? (card could be full) depending how many pictures you took.
Did the card have a lock button (sliding button on one side) - this could have been activated.
Does the card need re-formatting by the camera - maybe the PC removes the pictures and changes the format on the card.
Can you borrow/try another card from a friend/shop to insert and see what message comes back !!
That's about all I can think of -- hope that helps - Rays
