Question about Mitsubishi WS-65807 65" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

GREEN CRT OUT OF FOCUS

I recently replaced the STK IC convergence chips in the television and was able to successfully adjust the convergence on the set, but the green crt is out of focus, mostly around the edges of the screen. I have adjusted the dynamic focus. The service manual mentions setting the electrostatic focus, but doesn't elaborate on how to do this or where the focus vr is. Any help would be appreciated.

The individual lens have a lug nut that when loosened allows the lens to be turned-----cover red and blue lens and call up the convergence grid---from the rear adjust that lens until the green lines are in good focus(can also do the red in and the blue if needed)

You will get no more advantage as the manual focus controls on the splitter block have very limited range.

when done carefully tighten the wing nuts on the lens back tight.

SOURCE: Mitsubishi Convergence issue

If the screen is out of focus you probably need to adjust the focus on the focus block it is usually located behind the front grill, there are 6 adjustment screws on this block, leave the screen controls along just adjust the red, green, and blue focus screws. When converging a set everything is converged to the green, the blue and red are suppose to come to the green.

Its been a long time since I did it, but I believe you can adjust the green convergence grid by using the service menu. I found instructions on doing this over on the avsforum message board (years ago) so you might want to search there.

SOURCE: MITS WS-65869 The green CRT is creating a warped image.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms

  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
Your TV may have one or more of the following symptoms....
  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

The blue on the color is not lined up. We cant get it to move even on the auto focus

The "Magic Focus" is really a auto convergence that tries to adjust at about 16 points on the screen; if it will not correct the convergence the two convergence IC chips need to be replaced along with any bad resistors around them (total parts cost on EBAY would be under $25.00).

The chips are black and will have a number in white on them like STK-392-110 or a similar number, they are mounted on large metal heat sinks or a single sink with fins.

Whenever convergence will not adjust one of the chips is bad (always replace both at same time).

On my HD1080 Mitsubishi projection flat screen 55809 the picture is bowed on top and bottem and it look as if the projectors themselves are offset, but the picture is clearer as you come toward the center....

It could be one of two things: Either a bad solder joint or convergence IC failure.

Convergence IC failure is very common. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless

Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Toshiba 57H83 projection tv picture problem (shadow)

this is a model first sold in 2003 that uses two STK-394-250 convergence IC's---this is not an easy model to work on---I suspect one of the two IC chips is flakey---intermittant---if you repair it make sure you change both; the only less expensive possible problem is one of the IC's may have developed poor or bad solder connections on one of its pins(about18 pins on each ic)---if soldering is good--you have to replace the chips and see what you have.

There are red, blue and green lines going all the way across

it sounds like a convergence problem; in the customer menu there is an option to adjust it with the Sony remote---if either blue or red will not adjust in some direction---you have a bad IC---this set uses two STK-392-560 IC chips for convergence---both would need to be replaced and the set adjusted again. If this has been helpful give me a vote here---if you need more direct assistance--------- etower.766@netzero.net

The convergence IC chips are available on Ebay from Surburban Electronics for less then 14 dollars for the pair.(plus shipping)
