Question about Technics SL-PD888 5-Disc CD Changer
The tray is usually detected by an opto interrupter device. When they or the interconnecting circuits fail this is the symptom you will have. It can also be due to the alignment of the tray. This is why all of my CD players are not changers.

I can't find a manual. If it has both analog and digital outputs, compare both for sound quality and report the results. Also try them on different INputs of your electronics to eliminate that as a problem.
Let's examine THAT side, too. What are the components involved and how are they connected?
