SOURCE: Nikon D70 won't recognize the 2 GB, type II memory card

Try to clean the contacts of the memory cards and, mostly, of the memory card bay of the camera. Use a dry anti-static fabric (e.g. what we use to clean eye-glasses). DON'T use any liquid cleaner of anything like that!

SOURCE: I've inhereted a Nikon Coolpix

The 4600 works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. The camera is limited to SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

You can download the manual at

You can download the current versions of all (free) Nikon software from

The NuVue 700 works with SD cards. Your 16GB card is actually an SDHC card and won't work in devices not specifically designed to work with SDHC cards. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

My camera says the memory card is locked and memory card error appears when I turn on the camera. I've read that I have to format the card, but won't the photos be destroyed? How can I get my pictures

There is a tab on the memory card so you will you need to remove it from the camera and change the position of this tab to "unlock" it. DO NOT format the card until you've BACKED UP your files from it (typically to a PC or USB drive (stick or external hard drive).

How do i use it

It's simple: for normal use you can set the camera to "all automatic settings" so you have only to click! Be sure that you've inserted the correct memory card and charged the batteries. When finished you can print photos by yoursef with a PC or binging the memory card to your photo dealer like the old photo film.

When I connect my camera to my MAC to download the pics I just took, the camera turns off. It stays on for my pc, though. The battery is fully charged so I am lost. Any adivice?

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as iPhoto on the Mac or Windows Photo Gallery on the PC.
