SOURCE: Ink Failure on HP photosmart premium C309g printer

Turn off the machine, unplug the power cord from the back of the machine, remove the ink cartridges (lift the lid up at the base of the control panel), wait 2 min, plug the power cord back in, press the on button, wait until the printer prompts that the ink cartridges are missing, then replace the ink cartridges. If this doesn't fix the problem you may have to re-prime the ink lines to clear the error. You can find instructions for this at http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/hp-photosmart-ink-system-failure-1/.

Ink system failure

You mention that the printer has not been in use since October 2011 but that the cartridges are new. Are the current installed cartridges recently purchased, or were they new in terms of how much ink should be left? Any additional info would be great!

You can also visit this page regarding this issue and expand the section under ink system failure appearing:

Hi Debra,

Photosmart hp 3310xi - ink failure???

  1. Press the On button to turn the printer off.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Remove all the ink cartridges.
  4. Wait two minutes.
  5. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
  6. Press the On button to turn the printer on.
  7. Re-Install the ink cartridges when prompted.

If this doesnt work then apparently the controller for the inkjets is bad. you would be best served to take it back under warranty or replace the printer.
