Question about Maytag Refrigerators

Maytag freezer stopped working

Everything in my freezer has melted. It must have been happening for a few days because everything seems to be defrosted! There is no cold air. No noises just sounds like it's running. The "hum" like it's on, but nothing screaming that it's broken. This is a 10 year old fridge. Should I invest in the repair or buy a new one?

SOURCE: Fridge/Frezer stop working

Can you tell if the compressor (black soccer ball looking thing in the rear of the unit) is running? Is it really hot? Is the little fan running near it? If the compressor isn't running it won't cool. Also check that the coil in the freezer section isn't frozen solid blocking all air flow inside the unit. The other thing is that the defrost cycle may be "stuck" so it thinks it should be defrosting (therefore not running the compressor, etc.) Lots of things to check but that info will help decide which way to go so post what you find please.

Can you see the evaporator fan moving when it is plugged in?

Otherwise your defrost timer has failed.

Hi,
Without actually putting gauges on the system to see what is really going on, I would say that your compressor has failed. There is a good chance that it is something inside that has broken. Turning it off and back on will give it another life sometimes but like youexperienced it is usually short lived.
I assume that you have checked that the condenser fan is running underneath the fridge. Also that the condenser coils are not completely plugged with dirt. These things can also make your firdge od wierd things...
This should give you a couple of things to checkout, but I fear that the compressor is bad and you will need to replace it or get a new refrigerator. If you choose to replace the compressor get a full price quote before the work is done, as it may not be worth doing if you have an older refrigerator.

I hope that this helps you to solve your problem.

You don't have a timer you have a main board which replaces the timer.
Part 703 on this diagram and parts list.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good.

Turn the temp control to max, does the compressor come on? If yes feel the discharge line at the back of the compressor, is it nice and cold? If yes you can eliminate the simple items, make sure all the fans are working inside the fridge and at the rear of the unit. Check to make sure the defrost drain/trap are clear. Let it run for a while, then drop the temp to the usual setting it, and see what happens.

Fridge is not holding proper temp but freezer is still working

Hi,
Usually when this happens it is because of a problem with the fan that moves cold air from the freezer section of your unit to the refrigerator section. Either the fan has gone bad or the unit has frosted up to the point of stopping the fan. Try defrosting (unplugging) the unit over night and then check it to see if the fan runs. If not then replace the fan. If it runs and then stops after awhile like days or even a few weeks, then you may need a defrost timer.
The timer can also be called an advance defrost control.

Also make sure to check the heater coil for resistance. If that is open then it is the problem.
By doing a search for "appliance parts" you can find the part you eed easily.
Enter the model number of your unit and then select the part you need from the parts menu.
You will have it in a few days.
It is best to check a couple of sites to be sure you get the best price.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again

Maytg Top Mount Freezer drip tube leaks into bottom of Refrigerat

Just had this problem a few weeks ago. tube from freezer was frozen solid 1-2 feet down from the freezer. Empty EVERYTHING out of the the Fridge and the freezer into coolers or other suitable 2-4hr container(s). Unplug the unit and use a hair blow dryer on the coolest warm setting. If it's too hot it may melt plastic or styrofoam parts. As long as long as you have everything out and it's going to be at room temperature for a while, why not clean it totally out with fantastic or your favorite cleaner. Once your sure the clog is gone from the tube, put it all back together, plug it in and stop being a slob and keep it clean!!!! hehehehehehe

Not recovering

Make sure the fan in the freezer is running circulating the air.
How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

The refrigeration works fine for a few months and at a random interval will stop working. The ice melts and everything else gets warm. When unplugged then plugged back in, it works fine.

What is probably happening is you have ice buildup on your condensor(usaully located behind a panel inside freezer compartment) what happens is ice buildup over time will cause the condensor to stop cooling efficiently. One solution is to unplug frig and let ice melt off condensor, which you should do anyway unless it is a frost free model ,in which case you have a defrost problem. If this is the problem, you should check out the solution in one of my earlier threads posted 9/23 Hope this helps.

Refrigerator not cooling but freezer is

Something has stopped the cold air being ducted from freezer side to refrigerator side of things. Possibly duct blocked due to ice build up, evaporator not self defrosting etc. Turn unit off for a few days till it melts and then turn back on. If it was because a door has been left slightly open you will be ok. If for any other reason you will want to have it serviced in the next week or so.
