Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

Water line keeps freezing on my GE side by side refigerator

It's a 5 year old GSH22JFXM unit. Has worked fine until recently when the water dispenser stopped dispensing water. Ice still works fine. Repair person came out and replaced the water valve in the back of the fridge because it had low pressure. He had me unplug fridge for about 12 hours to thaw the line. That worked and I ran seveal quarts of water through the line but it froze again later in the day. He returned to check the valve which is fine. I know the freezing line is a known problem with GE side-by-sides. There doesn't seem to be any satisfactory fix except to replace the whole fridge..... can you tell me anything different?

The repair person checked the water tank and it is not frozen. He replaced the water valve which didn't fix the problem of the freezing water line. After unplugging the freezer overnight, the line thawed and I'm trying to prevent freezing by running water thru the line whenever I'm in the kitchen. There doesn't seem to be a real fix for the freezing line without spending a lot of money.

Is anything freezing in the refrigerator section?

  • D.J. LONON Dec 07, 2012

    No.

Then the freezer is to cold and freezing the line at the door. Try turning the freezer temp down some.

  • D.J. LONON Dec 07, 2012

Yes, that's the conclusion I've come to. I have it on the lowest setting (1). It froze before set at that number, so we'll see what happens. I might have to buy another unit - definitely NOT GE however!

I really appreciate your input, thanks.

Let me ask you this, is everything really frozen solid in the freezer even on the lowest setting?

  • D.J. LONON Dec 07, 2012

    yes

Ok, that's what I thought. Replace the temperature sensor in the freezer and that should do the trick. Here is that part to order.http://bit.ly/UjzRpi

Thank you Richard. Is it an easy part to install?

Yes, you will need to pull the shelves and then the rear panel to get to the coils in the freezer and you will see the sensor.

Check to see if the water tank in the bottom of the refrigerator section is frozen. If it is, you will need to turn the refrigerator section temp down.

Solenoid or the dispenser switch.

The water supply line connects to a water valve on the Ref. this water valve has two solenoids, one for the ice maker and one for the water in the door. Check this solenoid with an OHM meter.

The dispenser switch should send 110 volts to the solenoid. Check at the solenoid while pushing the water switch in the door.

SOURCE: Water Dispenser not working

If the ice maker is working, and no water is coming out, the water line may be frozen.  This happened to me yesterday, and I followed the advice on ehow.com.  It worked like a charm! Take a hair dryer, and blow hot air up into the dispenser tube, holding the hair dryer about 8-10 inches away.  After about 5 minutes or so, a tiny chip of ice and a couple of drops may pop out.  Fill up a couple of glasses of water to flush it out, and you should be good!

SOURCE: Water dispenser not working. Ice dispenser works

There should be a water filter inside the water lines to the water spout. This filter could be clogged, or the water lines themselves may still be somewhat frozen and not allowing flow to the dispenser itself.
You can also test the power to the dispensor to make sure it is drawing water. Can you hear the pump trying to pump water to dispenser? The water valve should also be opening. You can test power to the valve that draws in water from the external water lines.

There is a dual solenoid water valve. One solenoid controls the water dispensor the other is for the ice maker. If its under warranty you should definitely have it looked at.

Are you having any cooling problems whatsoever, anywhere? Is there any area in the unit that you dont put food for cooling reasons? if cooling is fine, check the water pressure as it comes into the refrigerator, you wil have to disconnect the water line at the solenoid valve behind the fridge. If pressure is good, pour 4-8 oz of water into ice maker, does it eject those cubes within 24 hours? then replace your water valve(s) One assembly houses a solenoid for both the ice maker and the water dispenser, both solenoids are bad.

GE gss22sgrf sidebyside water dispenser does not work, ice does

these unit have a problem with the water line freezing inside the freezer door. ge makes a tape style heater that goes inside the dispenser area to give just enough heat to keep it from freezing the water line.
you can try to change the freezer settings, warmer, clean the coils at the back of the unit and leave the freezer door open for 20-30 minute to allow the door to warm up and that will be a temporary fix to allow water to flow until you can get the heater kit.

is your drain line plugged up under that coil? another thing to check is if the door asket pinched that wold allow ait to infiltrate into the freeze and freeze up the coil. remember to clean under the unit once a year to keep the unit working properly and not having to struggle to condense the refrigerant. Hopt this solution's work for you and have a Happy New Year.

its possible that your water tank has frozen up, try turning the refrig off and leave the doors open for about 10-15 mins and try it again. if that works just reset temp controls a little lower..
