Question about Refrigerators

Fridge motor runs for extended time before briefly shutting down.

NEC FR 454 (model with computer adjusted freezer temperature control). Only stops running for a short period of time (maybe 30 mins) then runs for upto 2 hours, even if the door is not open. Every repair man I have spoken to has said to throw it away, the computers are always breaking down and it's not worth repairing. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't something simple I could check first. Still keeps everythig cold, and the door seals are working well too. Thanks

Thanks for your help. It didn't solve the problem, but there was plenty of dust and dirt on the coil, so can see how it may have.

At the back of the refrigerator on top is a removable panel hiding the computer element (mother board) of the fridge. It is replacable (i have replaced it a year ago) - you can do it yourself (buy a new element, remove the cover panel, unplug the old mother board and plug in the wires to the new one - is easy as;)

try to buy the element yourself , refrig mechanic quoted $ 500 for the element only so I found it myself from NEC people and paid only ca 150

good luck

About the only thing you can do is check the coils located either underneath the unit or behind it. they will have a fan that directs air over them to disapate heat. these become clogged with an incredible amount of dust over time and extend running time. u can go to a hardware store and purchase a coil brush for under ten dollars it is long and thin to remove dirt from the coils. use a shop vac also. hope this helps. please rate me

Kenmore refrigerator stop cooling but fan working

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

I have to keep the temperature turned up to 9 in order to keep the food at 45 degrees. The fridge is only 3 years old.

If it's the freezer control you keep at 9, it's probably a defrost problem. If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

Freezer frost buildup; fan constantly running; water filter

Just had mine repaired. Tech told me that the tempearature settings on the display panel are not EXACT science. The fridge is cooled by blowing air from the freezer to the fridge and when the sensor in fridge reached approx desired temperature, the damper is closed.

The noise you hear periodically (water dripping) is the heating rod melting the defroster (hence frost freeze), which unfortunately sometimes spills into the blower motor to fridge, causing frozen motor, causing the infamous ER FF error code and fridge failure.

I reluctantly had LG to do the energy saver fix (recall) and it replace everything that the internet users are complaining about.
