Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

The refrigerator is warm (55) and the freezer is cold (-5)

The motor in the freezer is running fine and blowing some cold air. There is a bit of frost in the freezer but not a crippling amount. The refrigerator is not getting any cold air and there's nothing coming out of the cold air distributor at the top of the refrigerator compartment. Any ideas which part? (THanks!)

When we unpacked the freezer we found the back vents were blocked with frost. The door had remained slightly opened recently and we think the moisture ended up clogging the vents with ice. When we defrosted the freezer, the refrigerator came back to the normal temperature.

Sounds like a defrost heater has gone out. If the frost is in the back of the freezer, it will get worse and worse until it stops cooling. You can either unplug the unit for 12 hours, let all the frost melt and then turn it back on. Or replace the defrost heater.

Yes, thanks very much . That's what we did, although we used a hair dryer to speed things along.

SOURCE: Warm fridge, cold freezer

I had the same problem. There was tons of ice build-up in the freezer back wall which prevented the cold air from flowing into the refrigerator section. I removed all the products from the freezer, and melted the ice - even took off the back panel (lots of ice back there). It solved the problem.

SOURCE: Fridge not getting any air, freezer is working

I have a Kenmore w/ freezer on bottom. The top vent in the fridge is ducted to the freezer and is supposed to blow air. Mine was not.

I removed all the frozen goods and took off the back panel (inside to unit) which had a little ice on it. Underneath the panel was a solid wall of ice......including the motor which is supposed to blow air up to the 'fridge. I'd bet a beer that is your problem as well.

The ice seized motor will not be harmed because it is resistance loaded.

The best part is with a blow dryer and some elbow grease...the fix is free! I hope it helps.

Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

Refrigerator is not cold

Hi Louis,

This is what has happened. Due to the door being opened for so long moisture which is naturally in the air has collected on your freezer coils. What you need to do is turn the whole thing off for at least 24 hours. Open the doors and put some towels around it to let the frost melt out.
All the air that gets cooled in your unit gets cooled by a fan that pulls air through those coils. Once the frost has melted out of them it should cool just fine.

Refrigerator is warm but bottom freezer works fine. It is a Kenmore with a bottom freezer and is about 10 years old

Listen to see if the fan motor is running, without the fan the air cannot circulate to the top refrigerator. If it is running then look for the baffle assy and see why its not opening. The baffle is a small door that opens and closes to keep the air going to the refrigerator from getting to cold. Basically its how the thermostat regultes the temperature in the refrigerator. Opening the baffle when it needs cold air and closing it when its cold enough. Finally check the back wall of the freezer and see if there is frost all over the back wall. If there is frost all over the back wall you are dealing with a defrost issue. Hope this helps

NO COLD AIR BLOWING TO REFRIGERATOR

The fan in the freezer blows its air through the COILS in the freezer. If the coils are plugged with frost, there will be no breeze coming into the fresh food compartment. One other thing i have seen on Amana and Sears, is that the fan slips on the motor shaft. Make sure the fan blade is tight on the shaft.

You have a defrost problem. Refrigerator gets cold via freezer. If blocked with frost, will restrict cold air into refrigerator.

Bottom of freezer/fridge only getting cold.

Thre is a fan inside the freezer which circulates the cold air around both the fridge and the freezer compartments.
You should be able to feel cold air blowing around the inside, particularly at the top of the freezer.
If the defrost thermostat fails open, the internal fan (depending on freezer) will stop and this can be the cause of the freezer being warm at the top and no ice.
You say the bottom of the freezer is blowing cold, but are you sure its blowing, as it can feel like a cold blow. Of course the fan could have failed or may be the defrost heater itself.
