Either one. The coil fires every compression stroke, or every other revolution, and that actuates the tach. Tachs are set to actuate every other revolution when the coil fires.
Who manufactured the tach? Maybe they have a web site and instructions? Did you tach come with instructions?
I looked at autometer instructions for your vehicle, have to use an adapter, it ties into the power wire for your coil pack. The adapter costs about 97 bucks, not including tax.
Different tach manufacturers may have different hook-ups?
easy... remove the mechanical tach and fit the light from the old one to the new eletric tach. Next run a wire from the back of the tach connection that looks like a small pole and run that to your ignition coil - negative side. Also make sure the ground wire (black) is mounted to one of the install bracket posts that hold the tach in place behind the dash.
Tachometer Wire Negative Wire (-): Any Wire That Is Note Red/Light
Green. The diesel tach wire is a green/white wire, located in a 5-pin
harness held up with tape behind the parking brake release.

According to wiring diagrams online... good luck with this. KEn
Look at the HEI distributor. You will see a rectangle shape coming out of the side of the coil cap. Observing it closer, you will see that there is abbreviations on it, raised up from the rectangular area.
BATT is Battery. This is where the thick Red wire goes. It comes from the starter, but doesw not receive power until the ignition switch is turned to the On position.
TACH is Tachometer. This is a wire smaller than the BATT wire, and is usually Brown in color, but color codes vary. May be Blue.
There are three flat blades, looking underneath this rectangular shape. Flipping it back and forth, you can see that one of the outside flat blades, goes to the Batt wire. The other outside flat blade goes to the Tach wire. The middle flat blade goes to Ground.
IT'S A BLUE WIRE ON THE BACK OF THE CONNECTOR THAT WOULD NORMALLY GO TO THE FACTORY TACHOMETER IN THE DASH. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE DASH GAUGE CLUSTER TO GET AT THE CONNECTOR. THE CONNECTOR WILL NOT BE PLUGGED INTO ANYTHING IF YOU DON'T HAVE A FACTORY TACHOMETER (DX, CX, HX ETC...YOU WILL HAVE TO SPLICE INTO OR CUT THE BLUE WIRE FROM THE PLUG. IT GOES TO TACH SIGNAL WIRE ON YOUR NEW TACH.
thank you,can i scotch lock it at the coil?
