Howdy,

It's highly possible the Capacitor has failed. The motor in this fan is Permanent Split Capacitor.

Do the blades spin freely? If you bump them around, do they coast, or stop suddenly? If they coast freely then that would point towards the capacitor. I believe Hunter has a 5 year warranty( it may be 1 year) on these fans, so it may still be under warranty and they may send you a new unit. Their phone# is 1-901-745-9222.

If it is the Capacitor, it is possible to replace it and to find out if it is the capacitor, remove the rear motor cover (should be one screw on the rear of the motor cover) there will be a small box, most likely black, or yellow with some writing on it, if it looks swollen up or melted, this is obviously the problem. However, depending on the failure mode, it may not have any visible indication that it has failed. If it has failed and you wish to repair the fan, Hunter should be able to send you a Capacitor and all you need to do is clip the wires on the old Capacitor and connect the new capacitor to those wires. Just make sure the wires are secured, it's very simple, you can do it yourself.

What to do if fan is frozen up

You need to put some Hunter oil then push the blades around by hand to get the bearings lubed. Then check oil level and add more oil if necessary.

I have a vintage table hunter fan. Where do I oil it.

You need to oil fan motors on the axis of the motor spindle. I'm not sure what they are called, but on the back of the motor you'll see a small round piece right in the middle of the motor. This is a bearing where the motor shaft spins. On the inside of that round thing is a felt washer or something similar that holds oil in it, and it's usually got some kind of cap in front of it that holds it in place with holes in it to let the oil seep out. If you can find a small bottle of turbine oil, they usually come with a pull out straw thing that is thin and it extends out 6 or 8 inches from the bottle to help get at places that are hard to oil. The motor will have one of these felt things on both ends of the spindle. If you can get at it, soak the felt washers with the oil, but you need to use the right kind of oil or it won't last long, and using the wrong oil could gum up and really mess it up. You can use any electrical motor oil, or turbine oil which doesn't gum up or get thick when its cold. Accessing the felt washers is much easier if you remove the fan and can remove the motor from the fan, but many times you can get at the bearings without taking the fan apart. Some of the older fans actually have an oil access hole on the motor to apply oil, and it will be marked if it has them. Hope this helps.

A customer of mine has a very nice Hunter original ceiling fan that she never oiled and now the fan just hums and wont spin. Is it possible to repair after no oil damage is done?

Put some oil in and turn blades by hand to lubricate the bearings. If the motor is frozen, then you would have to take it to a service center or send back to Hunter for repair.

Older hunter original, needs lubrication. Where do I put the lubrication in? What kind of lubrication/oil? Used to buy fan oil, but no longer available, Fan has clicking noise and lubrication oil...

Howdy,

This is the owner's manual to your fan

http://www.hunterfanhq.com/tools/sales/hunter/preseason/images/owners/41121.pdf

As for oil, you can use one of two oils. Depending on how old your fan is, I suggest changing the oil by removing the fan, turning the motor completely over and letting it drain into the "dish" on the part that spins, clean the oil out of there, then re-hang the fan and oil with 1 oz of either Hunter Fan Oil (which is available from hunter, or on ebay, just search for Hunter Original Fan) or Zoom Spout Oiler, both are the same oil.

Thanks

Is sewing machine oil the same weight as ceiling fan oil?

No!

First, how old is this fan, and secondly is it exhibiting symptoms of low oil? If it is, just adding oil is not enough, you should change the oil in it, by removing the fan, placing paper towels (lots of them) around the part which the blades attach to and turn the fan over dumping the oil into the paper towels.

If it is not having problems and you just want to top it off, use either the Hunter fan oil, or a product called "Zoom Spout Oiler" Both are a 10wt Turbine oil. I have also used 5w20 engine oil in these fans with no ill effects, but I don't recommend it.

If you have any more concerns, don't hesitate to ask.

Here's the manual to your fan.

Check/add oil to a hunter ceiling fan

If you are asking for instructions on checking and possibly adding oil to a Hunter Original fan. Here are instructions:

Check oil level immediately after filling the reservoir. To check oil, bend an ordinary pipe cleaner into a 1/2" long hook and dip it into the oil reservoir.

If oil touches the end of the pipe cleaner, the fan has ample oil. If it does not touch, add SAE 10 non-detergent oil slowly until it touches the pipe cleaner.

-Hunter Original fans rarely/ never need oil unless they were relocated or tipped. ...Or if the fan was improperly installed.

-Hunter sells an oil refill / oil level check kit with good instructions. They also sell a relocation kit that includes the same kit plus all mounting hardware needed.

Good Luck!
