I got the same issue. But, I go ahead hooked it up two banana plugs on teh VCR outlet. It works fine on my Cerwin Vega Sub.

hdmi has digital audio in it. no need for optical from same device.
check menu settings in receiver to activate sub, set crossover point and levels

SOURCE: how to connect my computer
here the steps:
1. locate the earphone jack on your pc.
2. after finding the earphone jack from your pc you need a connector (baby stereo plug to 2xrca plug).
3.connect the baby stereo plug to your earphone jack and then the rca plug to your Pioneer axuliary in.

First, did it EVER work?
No? Review the speaker setup in the receiver and make sure it knows you have a sub and is sending LFE to it.
Yes? Feed it a signal directly from a CD player or something. Start with a quiet sound passage as you probably will have no control of the volume.
If you need help beyond this, name the sub and how it's connected.
