Question about Water Heaters

Open Question

I have a ruud pacemaker gas water heater and the pilot light and the burner won't stay lit. It has a sealed combustion chamber and I have figured out its an airflow problem. I have blown out the side vents and vacuumed the entire inside and it still isn't getting enough air. What do I do???

SOURCE: Natural gas hot water heater not stying lit

Probably a bad solenoid in the gas valve. Higher voltage of a new thermocouple keeps it open longer but it still fails over a period of time. Look into a new gas valve for the water heater.

New Reliance gas water heater won't stay lit

There is a sensor that shuts off the gas to the burner if a flame isn't detected within a few seconds. It will usually look like a tube that extends into flame of the burner. It may be defective or it may just need to be repositioned so more of it is directly in the flame.

Reliant 501 Natural Gas won't stay lit

Reliance water heater?
Thermocouple is good if the pilot stays lit continuously.

501 is older model. Unknown if this unit has FVIR protection and sealed combustion chamber or open air intake on front of unit.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Reliance-2006-Service-Handbook.pdf

With FVIR protection:
Get more fresh air to the unit.
Clean the flame arrestor screen.
Test and replace the thermocouple:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-thermocouple.html
Inspect and clean burner and combustion parts
Test gas pressure, bleed air out of gas line.
Replace gas control valve.
Test draft air by lighting match and see if smoke is pulled into the vent pipe at draft hood on top of tank.

My 606 reliance gas water heater run for 5min and pilot goes out

If the pilot will light and stay lit, then ECO is not tripped, and thermocouple is probably good.
If ECO is tripped, then pilot will have no gas.
Usually if thermocouple is bad or installed incorrectly, the pilot goes out immediately after releasing the pilot knob during lighting.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-thermocouple.html

First thing is to clean water heater air intake and get more fresh air to the water heater and see if that solves problem. Combustion of hydrocarbon requires oxygen that must be pulled into the water heater from surrounding rooms. If water heater is closed off, or located in hot attic that is not correctly vented, or house is tightly sealed, or air intake is clogged, then there is not enough oxygen to support combustion.

Next thing to check is color and size of pilot flame.
If color of flame is NOT clear blue, or if flame is weak, then that says the pilot orifice and burner tubes and burner should be removed and cleaned, along with cleaning combustion chamber.

Additional suspects include combination of things, including: , bad gas control valve, low gas pressure, air in gas line, water dripping down vent and putting out pilot, reverse air flow or backdraft down the vent that blows out pilot, damaged burner parts because of exposure to trace chemicals such as bleach and wax.

The pilot won't stay lit on gas hot water tank.

Make sure thermocouple tip is seated inside the burner flame.
Make sure thermocouple is not overtightened. Finger-tight + 1/4 turn.
If the pilot lights, then ECO energy cut off is not tripped, but gas control valve might be bad.
Check color of pilot flame: it should be strong and clear blue.
If pilot flame is weak, or color of flame is yellow-orange: Clean pilot orifice and burner and combustion parts on yearly basis.
Clean air intake screen if applicable.
Increase air supply to water heater. Open a window and see what happens.
Check for adequate draft going up chimney using match under vent hood to see if smoke drafts immediately upwards.
Bleed air out of gas line.
Check gas pressure.

Does this water heater have a blower?
Is gas valve electronic? Or does gas valve have a dial?
If gas valve is electronic, have you checked outlet with circuit analyzer?
Did pilot light work correctly for a while? If so how long?
Where is water heater located? Hot attic? Closet? Garage? Is area dirty and dusty? Has air intake been cleaned?
What color is pilot flame? Clear blue or yellow-or-orange?
Have you inspected inside of combustion chamber for dripping water?

Reliance 606 natural gas water heater - model #640YORT - water does not stay hot. pilot has to be clicked to heat and then u can use hot water til tank empty and it will not continue to heat water.

If I understand correctly, the pilot light is not staying lit.
You light the pilot and water in the tank reaches temperature.
Once hot water is gone, then pilot light has to be lit again.

Gas pressure is good, and gas is flowing.
Thermostat is working at high end because it cuts off heating.
Vent is working because tank heats up.
Air intake is working.

Gas control thermostat might not be reading low temperature. Replace gas control valve.
Pilot tube might be dirty. Clean burner parts and combustion chamber, and air intake, and vent.
Backdraft might be blowing out pilot. Check for constant updraft by running water heater 5 minutes, and then light match under vent hood and see if smoke goes up.
Very hot air can put out pilot, especially when water heater located in attic. Add ventilation.
Improper vent might have water dripping back down into combustion chamber and putting out pilot light and rusting out the parts. Inspect for rusted parts and water.

Most gas water heater problems can be solved by having service technician perform yearly maintenance. Or by doing maintenance yourself.
This maintenance includes cleaning burner parts and combustion chamber, checking gas pressure and supply, bleeding air out of gas line, checking vent draft, making sure air supply is adequate and not exposed to chemicals, cleaning air intake. Also adjusting flame sensor so it is positioned correctly. If water heater is connected to electric circuit, the outlet must have correct polarity.

You can get gas to appliance indicates the gas control valve and water heater are not locked out. But the gas control valve thermostat can still be bad.

Rheem #22DV50-38,pilot light keeps going out.Thermal coupler has been changed.

Most gas water heater problems can be solved by cleaning burner parts and combustion chamber, and bleeding air out of gas line, checking gas pressure, and making sure gas shut-off handle is turned-on and parallel with gas line:
Many things cause pilot light to go out including dirty parts, air in gas line, and hot-unventilated atmosphere.
