Sony Handycam Video 8 CCD-TR66 NTSC Tapes won't play!

We have had this camera for over 10 years and recently we played one tape on it and it did fine. However when we went to play another, we got a flashing icon on the counter read out that looks like an arrow pointing up with a line under it followed by several beeping sounds. Tape goes in fine and comes out fine but it just won't play anymore. Please help!!!

Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.

You should remove the tape, check it is not full up, or replace it with new tape, I had this problem weeks ago, turned out the write-protect tab on tape had got pushed over to prevent recording.

Mini DV Tapes are not playing back. Nothing but blue screen when I try to view tape...no time code...nothing. Recently recorded footage plays back fine though?????

If recently recorded plays back ok, and there's no warning about low rf or head clogging problems,it seems to be electronic problem in vtr board,but usually is head problem,which is not so expensive.

Tape Wont Play

My advice is that you should by a cleaning cassette. Put this in the camera and run it for 10 to 20 seconds only. running the cleaning cassette for a long time may damage the head.
good luck!

Lines through the tape when recording or playing back

It could need a head adjustment. Any camera store can do that for you.

Playback problems started suddenly

I had the same problem. I fixed it by gently dropping the camcorder on the carpeted floor. I know it sounds silly, but it really works. I've had to do it twice, and it worked both times. I hope it works for you.

Tapes won't play

This is an indication that both data heads are dirty. In a digital camcorder both heads need to be operating correctly to obtain a full picture. Insert a new cleaning tape and run it for only 10 seconds or less, this should clear up the problem. Avoid using the tape that caused the problem. Do not use the cleaning tape for regular maintenance, this will damage the drum surface. Good luck to you! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectronics.org)

repairs will cost close to replacement and - it will be older ( needs new heads , probably ); buy a new one , and get a repair quote on the old one - or ebay it , for parts ;
