Question about Radio Communications

Open Question

I have an astatic pdc1 swr meter and when I would key the mic the needle wouldn't move at all it just sits at 0. I tried two different radios and same thing happened both times. What could be the problem?

Trying to setup a cobra 29ltd chrome. Put on channel 20, switch set on cal, keyed up the mic, and when I turn the swr cal knob the needle won't move. Magnetic ant with acc outlet for power Any ideas

First, make sure that the CAL/SWR/RF switch is set to CAL. If you still can't move the needle, check the RF output. If the needle moves to the far right, you at least have output power, and something is wrong with the SWR circuitry. Does the needle move with incoming signals?? If the needle doesn't move, then you either have a damaged meter. If the needle moves on rec eived signals but not when you transmit and the switch is set to RF, then you most likely have a damaged transmitter output stage.

How does a astatic pdc1 meter work

As you have the meter in your hands looking at it ,on the right you will see the letters ANT. for antenna .this is where you attach your antenna wire . Now you need a jumper wire to attach to the side that says TRANS . Attach one end of the jumper to the meter and the other end to the radio .make sure the meter is on SWR set the meter to forw and key the mic. now use the knob to adjust for set. Now set meter on ref and key the mic. the number you see is your SWR This should be done on channels 1, 40 and then on 20.for a mid band SWR.

How do you read the power meter on a model PDC1 test meter

its so easy a 5 y o can do it. Look at dial , it will have an upside down triangle to the right.Set you radio to forward and key your mic and they needle should be set on this mark.use the calibrate button to set it on the mark. Now put the switch on ref and key the mic. This is your SWR on this channel. Now do the same on 40 and 19. make sure you write those numbers down.

Why the swr meter do not set it goes all the way in the righthand corner this is for the astatic 600

there are knobs on the front.from the left is the set knob for SWR then next to it is the adjust knob. Turn the adjust knob to the left until the needle points to set. then take the first knob and turn it to the left.now key the mic again The needle should move to a more respectable number.

I have a swr meter and i would like to no how to ues it

Goto channels 1 20 and 40 and do the following.... this a generic calibrate all swr meters have different buttons different style of meters etc...
set meter too the set/cal/fwd position. key mic adjust the meters needle to cal spot should have an arrow or red line etc. then change switch to swr/rev too show your reflected swr.

ch 1 is longer wavelength than ch 40.
if ch 1 is good swr and ch40 is high swr-- then make antenna shorter
if ch 40 is good swr and ch 1 is high swr-- then make antenna longer.
then try to get a good balance between the lowest freq and the highest freq./ch.

WHEN I PLUG IN VERY LITTLE RECEPTION WEATHER BAND COMES IN FINE. SIGNAL DOES NOT MOVE EVEN WHEN KEY MIKE, CAN'T SET SWR VERY DIM EVEN WHEN ADJUST DISPLAY

1st. You cannot "set" the swr. The swr is not set on the radio. The antenna must tuned to attain an appropriate SWR reading.

2nd, If this doesn't solve your problem then you could have a worse problem. If there is a problem with the mic such as a break in one of the wires, the radio's receive will be off until you put a good mic on it. Try a different mic, and see if the receive comes back. Then check and see if your transmitting better.

As well, your meter could just be bad, as well your coax or antenna. Your receive could be poor if the antenna is not tuned to lowest SWR.

If it has been working up till recently, and you have "set" the SWR on the radio, which is not what the SWR function is for, because you don't set SWR on the radio, you could have been using the radio with the SWR super high and blown the final or other sections of the radio out.

SWR is basically signal reflection. If the antenna is not the right length, it will reflect energy back into the radio and damage it over time. The more an antenna is off from the correct length, the more reflect you will get.

The meter in the radio is used to determine how much reflect you are getting. You ideally want to have the lowest SWR possible.

To check the SWR, you set the meter switch to CAL. Key the mic. while holding the mic key down, turn the CAL knob up until the needle is at the little triangle at the top right of the meter marked by "CAL", Then while still holding the key, flip the meter switch to SWR. where ever the needle is at that point is your SWR.

You want ch 20 to have the lowest SWR. If the swr reading on channel 40 is higher then channel 1 then your antenna is too long. if it is higher on 1 then 40, its too short. Make small adjustments until 1 has almost the same reading as 40. then check ch 20 and it should be real low.

As I have said, if you haven't tuned your antenna as I have just explained, and have been using it as is, the possibility is high that you have already hurt the radio.

Although it could also have a bad meter. Use an external meter to read the SWR.

Other things to check. Make sure cable connections are tight. Make sure coax is not damaged. try another antenna.

Dont know how to use the swr meter on my radio

With radio turned on

1. Switch the first switch (S/RF SWR CAL) to CAL setting
2. Key mic up &
3. Turn SWR CAL knob while still keying mic until the needle is on the red CAL arrow at the far end of the meter scale. Unkey mic.
4. Switch the first switch back to SWR setting.
5. Key mic up again and record SWR reading and adjust as needed.
6. When done adjusting put switch back in the S/RF setting for normal operation.

Do not flip the switch with the mic keyed up.
