Did you reboot the laptop. Shut down, remove battery, plug in, boot normally.

Yes I did try that. Also checked headphone jack and it does work. It is enabled and shows that sound should be playing

You have check the Device Manager, Sound? You didn't mention your OS? Have you done a OS upgrade? Did you do a system restore/recovery to return the computer to a date before this issue? In Device Manager try to update drivers OR Uninstall the sound device and reboot, let your OS find the driver. OR go to the Panasonic website and reinstall the sound driver. Nothing is plug into the sound jacks, right? Does the sound icon, in the tray notification area, show it as Muted?

Icon shows that it is not muted, it also lets me know when something is plugged into the jack, I have a windows 7 operating system but have not updated or upgraded anything, I simply pressed the fn f4 to temporarily mute it, when I finished I did the same and no sound came out, I updated and reinstalled the drivers, I will do a restore and see if that helps.

The speaker on toughbook CF-30 quit working when I pressed function key and f4

If you have the speakers on and at the same time plug in a head set, the head set overrides the audio output. Make certain the Audio OUT is clear. Look to the Speak setup at the lower right desktop screen. Right click and check the Volume and Settings. Make adjustments from there.

My Panasonic cf-w8 is mute? How do I unmute it? Does the Fn button have something to do with it?

Well the FN key could have set the mute on if the mute key was also pressed.

Click the megaphone at the bottom right near the time and open the audio properties and volume control. Check to make sure the mute is not checked.

You can also click Start/Control Panel and look for Audio or Sound and adjust to make sure the mute is not check.

On your keyboard if you Press and Hold the FN function key at the lower left portion of the keyboard then you can hit the key that has the megaphone with an X across it to take the mute off.

Some laptops have 3 buttons that control the volume. One for turning the volume up, one for turning the volume down and one for muting the volume.

I used the fn then f4 button to mute my panasonic cf-y7

When booted into windows just hit fn and f4 again. That should unmute it. You can also look at the toolbar at the bottowm right corner. You should see an icon that looks like a speaker. Right-click and check to see if mute is checked. If so just uncheck it.

I used the FN + Mute button on my panasonic cf-w5 toughbook and now I get no sound when un-muting. This is the second one recently that has done this. Headphone jack will not work either. Is there another...

Double-click the "volume control" icon, to open the "sound mixer" control. Move all the sliders to "maximum", and remove any "mute" check-boxes.

Do you have a "FN + something" key to increase the volume?
