In manual page EN-8 It says "Do not remove the light brown Mica cover that is attached to the oven cavity to protect the magnetron. What is a magnetron and what mica cover are they talking about

The Magnetron is the high-power device that produces the microwave energy that is directed into the microwave oven cavity by means of a waveguide, which is a metal boxlike duct that transmits the microwave energy from the magnetron to the oven cavity. The Mica cover is a microwave-transparent film that covers the open end of the waveguide where it enters the oven cavity. It is there to prevent dust, dirt, and other things from getting into the waveguide. If that happens, the waveguide can develop electrical arcing, which will destroy it and the magnetron.

  1. Waveguide coverSparking and arcing in a microwave can be caused by a damaged waveguide cover. Try removing the waveguide cover to see if the problem persists. Once removed, the waveguide cover can be inspected for burns, which will indicate if this is the issue. If the waveguide cover is burnt or will not stay in the proper spot it will need to be replaced.
  2. Cavity/Rack supportIf sparking or arcing in your microwave is near a rack support, any exposed metallic area can be covered with a microwave cavity support. It is also recommended to replace the rack supports in this situation to ensure the issue is resolved.
  3. Cavity paintIf sparking or arcing in the microwave is visible on the side walls, the paint covering the metallic areas could have worn off or chipped. This can possibly cause pitting in the side walls or ceiling. If this is the case, it can be repaired with microwave cavity pain

Waveguide Cover

If the microwave is sparking or arcing the waveguide cover might be damaged and shorting out. Try removing the waveguide cover and see if the problem goes away. If there are any damaged spots in the microwave ceiling or sidewalls, repair them and paint them with microwave oven paint. Replace the waveguide cover if it is burnt or if it will not stay in place.

    Removing microwave waveguide cover

Okay...if you are talking about the center cover that fits in either the overhead of the microwave cavity, or along one of the walls, those rivet like things you mentioned, are plastic and the center locking pin simply pulls out with the aid of a small screwdriver. Once you carefully pull the locking pin out until it stops, take the same small screwdriver and use it to gently pry around the outer ring and the locking tab should come right out. If you are careful you should be able reuse them. I have done this before. Try to avoid handling the interior of the waveguide itself. Look for any scorch marks. Some discoloration is normal (kind of like a gray streaking color). However, if it is burned excessively, the waveguide is probably shot. The high voltage capacitor is not located near the waveguide cover, so you should not have to worry about discharging it. It is located BEFORE the magnetron. Unplug the microwave oven as a safeguard. I hope this helps you.
