Question about Computers & Internet
Desk Top Computer
A couple of thing will cause this, The backlighting is going out due to a tiny switch, that controls the light when you open and close the lid. It's located near the hinges, it can get stuck due to dust or a misaligned hinge. Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Yi6GNFcP3w

It sounds like the bezel (the trim piece attached to the front of the drive) is what came off. You can usually still get it to open in this condition, but you have to get creative a bit.
typically the eject button is a physical button, but it depresses a small electronic button when you press it. This should get it to open. Otherwise, you can right-click the drive in my computer and select "eject". If that doesn't work, use the paper-clip method. Look for a small hole (on the bezel) which lines up with the emergency eject button on the drive. Straighten a paper clip and insert it at this point, which should eject the drive.
Then I would turn off the machine, (leaving the drive open) carefully turn it over. Look for a locking (retaining) screw on the underside of the laptop. On many models the screw is accessible without removing anything else, but I have seen where the screw is hidden under other components; proceed at your own risk here.
Once you have found the screw and removed it, that should be all that is holding it in. You can tug gently on the drive and it should slide right out.
From there, find the replacement model (I like ebay quite a bit for this type of part, since it will be much cheaper. Note the Model # which is usually on top of the drive on a label. It will make finding a replacement much easier than trying to shop by your laptop model #.
The key here is getting the correct type of data connection. As long as the bezel fits your computer, and unit will work (make sure you get the right kind of drive: DVD-R, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, CD-R, or some type of combo drive). While you can also find these parts on the internet, watch for some type of warranty on the product in case it fails to work. Many reputable sellers will have at least a 30 day warranty, which gives you time to test the product.
Once you have your replacement, examine it and make sure any trim pieces line up (you can also remove them from your old one if needed), then slide it into the slot, reinsert your locking screw, and you should be ready to test it.
I would test all functions of the unit right away: if it's a recorder, test burning a cd or dvd, play a dvd movie etc. to ensure everything works. I have seen a DVD-R drive that works for everything except recording DVD's (will play DVD's and CD's just fine, but not record).
Good luck and thanks for your question.

Just to clarify, the box (power brick) in the middle of the power cord is the power supply. With that said, there is a light on the box (may be green, blue, or some other color). Does it come on when you plug it in (assuming that the wall outlet or serge protector has power)? If it doesn't then the power cable needs to be replaced. If it does then there is something wrong with either the cable going between the box and the computer, the power connector, or the connector on the computer.
