SOURCE: where is the fuse on the philips fr965 receiver

The mains fuse would be located inline with the primary of the powersupply transformer inside the amp chassis. Exercise caution when servicing electronic equipment. Good luck.

I have a phillips mx900 speaker system and once connected to my tv, the speakers only make a pooping sound and no other sound comes out of them.

Wow that stinks.

Make sure that you have them securely connected to the TV via "variable audio out" or the proper the left/right channel connections.

Philips receiver hts3450 was stolen but I have all my speakers and subwoofer.

Without doubt the Philips had an amp built in for the subwoofer. So that when it is connected to the TV the sound signal from the TV is just too weak to power it.
My advice would be if you can't get a another receiver is to look up the specifications of the it. You should then be able to find a suitable amp that will power the subwoofer for the TV from those specifications.

Philips FR965/17 Digital Audio/Video Surround Receiver

Well, if the headphones work, then the amp in the rcvr is working.
Make sure speakers are hooked up properly (Spr A, Spr B, etc.)
Be sure speakers are selected properly on the front panel.Look in the owners manual and see if its possible to reset the reciever. If this is an older unit, speaker relay may be dirty or defective or unit is in protection. If unit used to make a click after a few seconds when first turned on and now it doesn't, then the relay is not working.

Setting up receive set top box and tv for surround sound

Plug the TV to an open channel on your receiver via this output:
*Rear, 1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) ( TOSLINK )
This will look like a single RCA output plug.
Set that input channel on your receiver to some sort of virtual surround mode because it doesn't look like your HDTV has a decoder in it (meaning it will come out stereo and the receiver will have to fake it).
Turn the volume all the way down on the TV and use the receiver to control TV volume just as you do with DVDs.

*Substitute this with the digital audio output on your set top box if you are sending video only to the TV from the set top box (component, DVI or s-video connections). So video goes to the TV, audio to the receiver.
