If only on some DVD's may not be the unit, possible issue when recording etc---the unit is not smart enough to only fail on certain discs unless it happened during recording---a mismatch of some type.

I hooked an Apex DVD player to my Quasar TV-VCR Combo and when I try to play a disc in the dvd the picture fades in and out

That is due to the copy protection circuitry built into the VCR. It was originally deigned to keep people from making pirate copies of VHS tapes, but the circuitry will sense that what you are playing is prerecorded copyrighted material and will do the picture fade thing.

The cost to repair it will cost you more then to just buy a used one from a auto wrecker.

Fading dvd picture

DVDs are recorded in Macrovision* format which distorts the video when playing through a VCR. This is an anti recording device to prevent duplication. You can try finding a decoder that connects between the player and VCR to override this

Picture keeps trying to black out

Hi I have seen this problem before, and it was the video processor. I have seen the picture fade to black, then come back, and also fade to green. The cost to repair is prohibitive unless you could find a shop that perhaps has hung on to a unit that was hit by lightning, and only has a blown power supply. The only ray of sunshine I could offer, is if you recently connected your unit to a vcr, because the effect you describe is also what appears when you try to play a dvd that is copy guarded. If your DVD player is connected to a vcr then to the television, take the VCR out of the loop, connect straight to t.v. and all will be well. Goog Luck!
