1) Make sure Wireless Lan is Enabled by pressing the light button of it
2) Click with right button on the Battery Icon (on the botton bar aside clock)
3) Select Windows Mobility Center (a window will open up)
4) Click on "Turn wireless on" button.
Once you press the button that represent the bluetooth and also the wireless it will turn from an amber colour to blue then if nothing is showing for you connect to anything then you have it but is not yet drive . you will need a WLAN driver meaning a wireless local area network driver then you can get that downloaded from the http://microsoft.com/download that is compatible with your operating system then after downloading it install it with the prompt it gives you . then repress the button and check for test.i if that doesn't work then maybe someone has work on your system before that has forgotten to connect you wireless cable on the motherboard.
turn on the wireless button ON...if still the problem exists then re-install the wifi driver from the motherboard drivers & utilities cd/dvd given by your compaq distributor.
Then you will find your wireless connection working properly.
Since the switch is soldered to the motherboard, I would not suggest messing with it, I would get a small usb network adapter and connect that way. The only way to fix that problem is to resolder a new switch. It cannot be bypassed, it is built into the motherboard circuit. The button has to be in the "on" position to be able to be enabled from the device manager because the "On" button turns on the Wireless radio.
