My garbage disposer stopped working - I can hear the engine hum when I flip the switch, but no part seems to be moving. Wondering if this can be fixed or if it's dead and needs to be replaced. Thx!!

Sometimes the disposal rotor is jammed by a piece of chicken bone for example. You can use the supplied hex key to stick into a hole at the bottom and jiggle the rotor free.

How to replace a Garbage disposal

If you buy a similar model from the same manufacturer, you can leave the sink fittings in place. Unplug the power and disconnect the waste pipe. Undo the bayonet fitting securing the waste disposal unit to the sink fitting. Fit new unit to sink fitting, reconnect waste pipe and power. Run the unit with plenty of water to check for leaks. Job done.

Troubleshot dead dishwasher

The contractor may have cut the flow of water to the dishwasher while he was working on the disposal. Look for a cutoff valve in the vicinity where he was working. Good luck!

My garbage disposal will not start from a dead stop.

The motor start winding has gone bad, or capacitor burned out.
Generally disposals are replaced when motor goes bad.
Mostly because the disposal is sealed unit and cannot be easily disassembled.
If you have local motor-repair guy, who has disposal bearing parts, and can get the disposal apart, then repair might be possible... but the bearing seal would be hard to replace.

Generally speaking, a household disposal is a household disposal. The Badger is, IIRC, the same as the Kenmore, and several other brands. No, you won't have to change pipes. The pipes are the same. The only difference will be the power requirements.

My garbage disposal, a Badger, Model 5-8, is jammed. The motor is working, I hear the humming noise, but it is not spinning. This has happened before, and I have freed the plate, by inserting an allen...

If you can't get the allen wrench to free what ever is in the disposal, you might be able to peer down through the drain hole into the inside of the disposal. Make sure power is off. Take a small flash light to look in to the disposal this way. You can take your hand or a pair of needle nose pliers and reach down in to the disposal. It may be really rusted out and just needs to be replaced. Replacement is not too difficult if you can buy another badger that will have the same mounting plate underneath it. Just be sure to shut off the power, then you can loosen the disposal from the mounting plate. All you need is a screw driver that you can insert in to the mounting plate turning holes. This is located just under the sink, between the sink and the disposal. Turn the plate counter clockwise and the disposal should come loose from the sink. (Be sure to take the two bolts out holding the disposal to the drain pipe)
Next, after the disposal is loose, turn it upside down, and disconnect power. You will probably have to take a cover plate off to get to the wire nuts that hold the electric to the disposal. I believe Lowes carries Badger disposals, as well as Home depot might but I'm not sure.

Assuming you have a voltmeter (or multimeter) at your disposal, you will have to trace the power from the plug to the timer / control board. If the thermal cutout has activated/failed, you will also get a 'dead' appliance. It's mounted directly on the magnetron.

Checked the breaker, used the allen key several times, pushed red reset button on bottom several times unplugged then replugged. Water runs through it, no humming sound...what to do now?

If switch is getting power to disposal, and disposal blades rotate freely, but disposal will not respond, then disposal needs to be replaced.

Check for power at disposal.
If blades rotate, and allen wrench works fine, then the bearings are not rusted and there is no obstruction.
Motors burn out, and there are no replacement parts for disposals.
Good news is disposal is not leaking water all over under the cabinet, and sink can be sued until disposal is replaced.

The motor on my Badger 5 disposal was humming but not rotating. I cleaned out all the debris, reset it and now there's nothing - no hum, nothing. Is my badger dead?

The badger 5 has a dislodge device on the bottom right in the very center. An allen wrench will fit if you have lost the tool that came with it.

FIrts you will need to dislodge anything preventing it from turning. (Insert the right size allen wrench and turn both directions) The remove whatever comes loose after dislodging.

Then opush the red reset button on the bottom. Check the breaker that powers up the disposal, as you may have tripped it.

If the breaker is on, the unit is turning freely, and the reset button is pushed, then the next step is to check for power using a volt meter, to make sure the disposal is indeed getting power. If all the above has been done, the unit IS getting power then yes, the disposal needs to be replaced.
