Typewriter platen won't move

I have the Triumph Contessa Typewriter and can't get the platen to move. I guess, it's some kind of travel lock, and I don't know where to unlock it. Is anyone familiar with this typewriter and can help me?

I found it. It was a lever right next to the '1'. Thank you though.

SOURCE: Unlocking a typewriter.

I'm a bit confused on this one. I have a XL 1000 and it has no display. How can it "say" it's locked? Some of the Smith Coronas have a printhead lock to keep it from being damaged in transport, but not this model. Need more info.

Margin Release should be near the top of the keyboard on the left or ride side of the keyboard. You may have a sticky margin lock bail or a spring loose or broken on the bail mechanism if the margin release doesn't work. Sometimes the linkage for the bail needs to be adjusted. If you are mechanically inclined, you can possibly follow it through, but if not, seek out a service tech.

There might be a setting for how many lines it moves when the carriage gets to the end. It is mechanical so you'll see it!

  1. Is the daisy wheel locked in the forward position?
    1. Pull the black lever back, away from the platen.
    2. Lift out the daisy wheel and inspect it for damage; replace the daisy wheel if it is damaged.
    3. Re-insert the daisy wheel and push the black lever towards the platen until it locks in place.
  2. Is the ribbon moving?
    1. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the typewriter
    2. Inspect the ribbon for damage
    3. If the ribbon is silver, it is exhausted and must be replaced
    4. If the hammer has been striking in one place, there will be a clear area near the center of the ribbon.
    5. Turn the colored knob on the left side of the ribbon cartridge counter-clockwise to advance the ribbon a small amount. Replace the ribbon if it will not advance.
    6. Re-insert the ribbon
  3. Turn on the typewriter, insert a piece of paper into the typewriter and type a few letters
    1. Did the hammer move forward?
    2. If the hammer moved, did the ribbon advance with each keystroke?
If the hammer did not move or the ribbon did not advance, the typewriter will require service. If the typewriter still does not make an impression on the paper, your typewriter will require service.

Hi, the spool or round handle that one turns to move the paper up or down manually has been stripped by other users of our typewriter. When we turn it, it does grasp the gear to turn the platen. Hope I...

I don't have one of these to look at right now but, many models were secured with an Alan screw (or two) through the plastic, locking the knob to the platen shaft. If your has Alan screws, tighten them. I have seen knobs that cracked and if that's the case, your best bet would be epoxy.Best of luck,RonIf this helps you, PLEASE log back on to this webpage and leave comment. Problem with the line spacing on my brother sx-4000 typewriter. The spacing wheel is not moving the paper down to the next line. I've moved the lever on the right side back and forth to see if it...

If all the settings are right and it feeds with the platen knob the plastic gear on the index mitor is probably broken the part is about 25.00 plus installation.

Typewriter won't move up when I press the RETURN key

some machines have a selector near the platen, or a button on the left platen knob, that will cause the platen to not index (roll up) when you hit return. otherwise, you have a broken typewriter, and should take it to a repair shop

Is your typewriter made by Royal or Brother? I think your question was mis-posted under Brother as opposed to Royal. IF your machine is a Royal, Brother will NOT be able to help you. THIS GOES FOR EITHER MANUFACTURER...Have you inspected the platen drive gear? Is it cracked, missing teeth or otherwise damaged? If not look on both sides of the typewriter for the drive motor. Look to see if the gear mates with the motor.
