Question about Mitsubishi WS-55805 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

ONLY HD picture does not fit on WS-55805

Hello, My SD picture works fine on my WS-55805. Unfortunatley I don't believe my TV is going into the full 1080i when using the HD inputs. I believe it is stuck on 960i. The convergence on both inputs are fine and I can move them with no issue. The picture on the SD inputs fill the screen perfectly, however, on HD the top of the screen and Right of the screen seem cut off. My console is on the 1080i setting. When I go into the menu of the TV even on the DTV (HD) input, it only gives the option of 480i/p or 960i. The picture is much much better so I believe it really is getting some of the HD signal. Also there is no zoom button on my remote just a "Format" and this TV will not let you format or use pip in HD. Any suggestions? also the TV may have been bumped quite ******* its shipment to college. I am good at electronics and will have no problem opening this bad boy up, soldering or anything of that You guys are my last hope thank you so much!!!

To be kind you are wasting your time, This is a 1st generation HD set not designed for the modern equipment you are using---You cannot turn a Model A Ford into a Roll Royce.

I has only one HD input designed for a set top HD box providing it a 1080 I signal.

Hey sorry but I do disagree... This TV about 2 years ago had a perfect picture that had a ps3 and Hd cable box (from the help of a input auto selector that I bought for 40 bucks) that fit the tv fine. This is a new issue I am experiencing.

The set shows as first produced in 1999 and is a V16 Chassis. It does have the 3 hidden tech menus, one of which is the OPTION menu---it basically offers a hard reset of the TV back to factory (convergence is not affected as stored in another area). I have seen it clear all sorts of odd issues, no sound, odd video, OSD only (no video) and it puts all labels back to condition set was in when new in the box. You if not aware need the Mitsubishi remote and a 4 digit number code which is model specific---no promise but have not seen it cause problems---one site I use has a lot of the full service manuals with this information. You want the codes for Option, Adjust, and Tech convergence? I am more than willing to be proved wrong if it can help someone......

Actually today I did successfully fix my problem. I attempted the reset to "initial" which didn't help. What fixed it was going into the adjustment service menu using menu-1-2-5-7 then hitting audio button until jungl adjustment ( or something close to that) then used the horizwidth, vertheight and a bunch of others to correctly align the screen as well as I could then used the service menu convergence to make my tv good as new!!! Thank u for the help everyone!!!!

SOURCE: Mitsubishi WS65809 HD input (DTV) not working

All these sets do have a hard reset---not the reset button on the front of the set---it will return the set to the factory original condition it was when new in the box--it will not affect the convergence as that is stored in a separate unit--the DCU (digital convergence unit).

It is accessed with an original MITSUBISHI remote.

You can try it if you want:

ACCESS CODE FOR WS65809 IS:

menu-0,1,7,0 enter

There are 3 hidden menus in the set--this is the Option menu

You will see either reset or option etc and highlight it with the remote and hit enter. Set will shut off and should come back on channel three in the air band--any labels you placed on inputs will be gone and set will be in air band--you will if on cable have to change it to cable band and auto program etc.

Let me know what happens and if you have questions I am here to help.

Mitsubishi WS 55805 nothing but blue screen and black square in middle

A full service manual is available online---I will presume you tried to unplug it for a while and then power back to see if will reset itself.

This set has three hidden menus---one is the OPTION menu--in that menu with the Mitsubishi remote you can do a hard reset of the entire set= sets all back to factory except convergence adjustments which are stored in another area--cures all kinds of oddball issues.

I can give you a link to the manual and the page numbers for the OPTION menu.

Note: the other two hidden menus are Convergence and adjustment--do not go into adjustment menu as one wrong move and poof!

The convergence circuit has probably failed and needs replacing of the two ICs called STKs. The normal cost for having this done is around $400. You can repair it by yourself, BUT you must be an experienced electronics tech and advanced soldering expert. If so, you could do the job for around $200 or less. Don’t even think about it unless you have some deep experience with electronic component replacement.

Never hooked up the HD

Have you tried selecting a different input( do you have the remote?), if so have you set your input to accept HD input ( you access this thru your 'Menu" button on your remote). I run my HD input from my game console (X-Box 360) and have to select HDTV input channel (there are 2 of them along with 2 cable inputs), and have not had a problem with this at all. good luck.

HD issues with ws-55805

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Screen goes black

If you are willing, remove the speaker grill and the rectangular board behind that and look very, very carefully underneath each of the three picture tubes for evidence of coolant drops on the printed circuit boards. These sets have been known to spill a few drops of coolant onto the boards and this causes intermittent problems such as yours. This is my first direction in your case. Let me know.
