Thats a pretty old PC but still usable. You might have a bad video card or the heat sink has failed. Adding some thermal paste to the processors heatsink will probably fix this. If not, replace or add a video card. The video card can be found pretty cheap online.
Video cards are normally built-in on the laptop motherboard and you cannot replace them or add a new one because there is not an expansion slot to add a video card.

You only really need to upgrade the video card and the PSU (most video cards need more power than what most companies like dell and gateway provide.). So no need to buy a new computer.
check on device manager, click on start then right click on your MY COMPUTER icon in the start menu and then click on MANAGE. now click on DEVICE MANAGER and double click on the DISPLAY ADAPTERS to see your graphic/video card name.
It would be the card that your monitor plugs into. If the monitor plugs straight into the motherboard, then all you need to do is add a video card and it should automatically bypass the built in one on the motherboard. Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution with a fixya rating. :c)
With your 300 watt power supply I wouldn't get a video card thats too beefy. Here are a list of video cards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+1069633099&Configurator=&Subcategory=48&description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=
If I were you I would upgrade your Power Supply too.
You do not give a reason for wanting to add a video card to this laptop, whether the video is not working or you just want to upgrade. I just looked at Gateway's support site and it appears the video that is standard with your laptop and motherboard is an integral part of the motherboard and cannot be replaced or upgraded.
