please clarify what you mean by " i to reformat just get letters scrolling" Did you try to reformat the drive? and how? if not, try pressing F8 while before you see the windows XP screen and select safe mode. Then check the event logs.

It really doesn't sound like you've had one decent answer here. This is more then likely a software issue. Unfortunately without the restore media you're limited in what you can try to do to resolve this issue.

The virus has destroyed my computer. I want to put the new xp cd and reboot it. How do I reformat or initialize my harddrive. Please help.

Turn on your pc and put in xp cd. Now restart and when screen turns black keep on tapping key F12. This will ether say choose your boot device which would be your cd/dvd drive or it will say press any key to boor from a cd and if so when it shows this just press space bar but make sure you do it before it goes away because you will have to repeat it. Once this is done just follow these steps:
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1040583.html

Only thing that needs to be done different if you have had opearting system installed on this is on step C choose option delete partition(just press letter D) and this will bring you to another screen not in this walk through. On that screen just press letter L and then enter to start install. Once this is done it will move you to figure D. You might not have all the options but just choose ether quick ntfs(this is pretty fast) or just choose plain ntfs (this takes time but if there are any bad sectors on hard drive it will try to repair them) Once you choose this just sit back and watch it do the magic. Somewhere around 32 minutes left of setup it will ask for your input. Just follow the prompts and it is walk in the park from here on. Hope this helps.

E-machine 2003. crashed while uploading pix-help!

Excelent description thanx. I assume you have bought a new PC. If so simply remove old HDD and plug it into the DVD cable on the new PC and boot up. It should read the old HDD, simply "copy" pics to new HDD.

DO NOT "MOVE" pics or will corrupt drive futher.

Reformat oldd HDD and repload Windows, all good again.

I need to reformat a dead harddrive

Hi there !!

Method 1: Perform a clean install of Windows XP loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); A clean installation consists of removing all data from your hard disk by repartitioning and reformatting your hard disk and reinstalling the operating system and programs to an empty (clean) hard disk. For more information about important things to consider before you partition and format you hard disk and how to partition and format your hard disk by using the Windows XP Setup program, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 313348 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348/ ) How to partition and format a hard disk in Windows XP To perform a clean installation of Windows XP, follow these steps:
  1. Back up all important information before you perform a clean installation of Windows XP. Save the backup to an external location, such as a CD or external hard disk.
  2. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD into your CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

Note To boot from your Windows XP CD, the BIOS settings on your computer must be configured to do this.
  3. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.
  4. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
  5. Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then press F8.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows XP Setup.
If you have successfully installed Windows XP, you are finished. If these steps did not help you install Windows XP, go to the "Next Steps" section.

Here's the link that contains the screen shots as well:

Try these steps & hopefully you will be able to format the Harddrive.

Dunno what happen??

When You Boot up your screen goes in to the windows xp loading bar and after a quick blue flashin screen pops up and it restarts unfortunately this is what they call the Blue Screen of Death so more than likely you harddrive with the os is corrupted so either you will need to reload the OS or by a new harddrive and load the Os on that Harddrive

Answer to your question

You will need to get into the bios, and set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive. Since your in this uncompromising loop, remove the hard drive, then start the machine. It should go to the initial Toshiba screen and you will see the prompt on what to press to get to the bios, or utility set up. Once your in the bios, find the boot order and set the CD drive over the hdd. Then put the hdd back in, the recovery or operating system disc in the CD drive, and start the machine. It should now boot from the disc. At this point you will want to do a system repair. If the repair doesn't take, then reformat the hdd, and install a new operating system. If the hdd will not format or you have any issues during or after the install, then the hdd has failed and will need replaced. If you need any futher aststance, just ask.

Installing new hard drive

hi,

its brand new right? have it reformatted for the first time. you can do this by installing an OS and it prompts you to reformat it. actually, there are other ways to do that but for me, this is the most secure way to reformat a new harddrive in your situation.

hope this helps.
