New Bright Gold Rush Express Train Set wheels will not spin?

This set is battery operated with C batteries in the coal train car with a cord attached to the engine. When turned on the headlight comes on and horn works, but the wheels will only spin for about 5 seconds or so, then stop. I was told something about a possible weight in the front that may have broke off so I taped a couple quarters, still nothing.

SOURCE: I believe my New Bright Holiday Express train set

Yes they do. I have the #380-2 Water Tank car (and the other 4 that are available) They run and operate just as the other cars do.

SOURCE: Holiday Express Train Set

We struggled with this just today...finally figured out that you have to twist the small piece right behind the bell on the top of the locomotive.

SOURCE: New Bright Model #183 - how do I make the train

This train set is very particular and getting it to work each Christmas is a family tradition in frustration. First you must make sure that all the pieces of track are connected properly and that the track is perfectly symmetrical and flat. We double-check the battery positions every year and find one in wrong. There are + and - signs, but they're hard to see; use a flashlight. There is a black toggle switch below and behind the red stack that toggles forward (to make the train go forward) and backwards (reverse); straight out perpendicular to the train is the "stop" position. Also, you have to start at a stop/switch station. One other note: behind the red stack, there is a smaller black stack. If you turn this, you can make smoke come out of the stack. I think I remember someone suggesting a drop of cooking oil. Hope this helps!!! Hope you get it set up for Christmas!!!

SOURCE: DOES THE GOLD RUSH EXPRESS TRAIN SMOKE

Most trains will smoke if vegetable oil is used in the smoke stack. 5 drops at a time. If you want to buy the stuff that came with it, go here http://www.wholesaletrains.com/Search2.asp?Search=smoke+fluid&scale=%25&Submit22=+Search+Again+

Buy a brand new one with instructions herehttp://aeif.scalemodel.net/fsid.aspx?id=131633602115&sid=2&c=487

The batteries have to be in the locomotive, and I would expect a removable door underneath or from the rear of the loco.

I have a holiday train No. 181 which did not come with instructions. I can not locate where the batteries go can you send me instructions?

The batteries go in the first car following the lokomotive, the coal tender. There is a small black knob with a ****. Turn it, and it will open the top part, so you can put the batteries in. This train set will not take a rechargeable battery. Bummer...

I bought this from a friend, and now I see there is no transformer..:( will it run without it?

The battery pack is in the coal tender. The top of the tender lifts off pretty simply. It requires six C batteries. You connect the tender to the locomotive via a power cord, which should be obvious. If it's not, perhaps the cord has been severed.

How do you replace the batteries in James the train?

James the train has a tender attached to him. On top of the tender there is a black plastic piece that looks like coal. Slide the black plastic piece towards you and you will see the battery underneath it.

The train is not responding to the remote.

I had a similar problem with my 11000 Holiday Tradition Express. I cleaned the track with an eraser (pencil-type) and then used a soft cloth to clean any possible residue. After doing this twice, my train is now running.
