Nintendo DS Sound Not Working

My daughter has a pink Nintendo DS Lite and the sound isn't working. If she uses headphones the sound works fine but it will not make any sound without them. I have checked the volume button and it works fine and there is nothing jammed into the headphone port. (This was the advice at Nintendo.com) Im thinking maybe there is a loose wire in the speakers but cant figure out how to take this part of the Nintendo DS off.Does anyone have any ideas about this? I would rather try to repair it myself if possible because Nintendo charges $75.00 for repairs and $85. for a refurbished system.. If anyone could tell me how to remove the covering so that I can get to the speaker area, it would be greatly appreciated... By the way if I tilt the screen backwards I can get sound..Thats why Im thiking its a loose wire or a pinched wire..maybe. Thanks in advance for any help

    NIntendo only covers their products under warranty for a year .. After that you have to pay a $75 repair charge. The store is no help either after 90 days. For now she is using the headphones but of ccourse she complains about that.. Im thinking I may just have to buy a new DS anyway. There is an option through nintendo where you can buy a refurbished model for $85.. Which is about $50 cheaper than buying a new one at a retail store. Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it!

You might have a wire of some sort out of place as you suggested. I would not try to take of any part of the DS, because if you hit something wrong, or can't get it back together, them you may have to get a new DS. Did your daughter spill something on her DS, or drop it?

If you don't know what happened to the DS, then it may be the companies problem. if your daughter recently got the DS, then you can return it to the store, or send a direct complaint to the company. Even if she got it a long time ago, if it suddenly starts not working at full efficiancy, send it back to nintendo. If you still have the repicet, then send back to the store and tell them what happened.

Try leaving the DS on until the battery dies, then charge it all of the way with the DS off. If that doesn't work, I would call Nintendo customer service. They are excellent at helping people with problems just like this. Here is the 800 number I got off of their website. 1-800-895-1672

Well.. That's odd.
Check the left side of your DS volume.
there's a toggle button that says
- VOL +

toggle it rightly,as the volume will get higher. Maybe your headphones can adjust the volume. So either contact www.nintendo.com or call Nintendo 1-800-255-3700. Or if you like your DS with headphones,keep it that way.

Only used a few times and the power is on but nothing showing on the screen and theres no sound its a black ds lite


The reason the screen isn't showing-up is probably because of runny colors or blotchy colors permanently stained on the screen, even when the Nintendo DS Lite is OFF, my guess is that the liquid crystal display (LCD) is cracked. And also, there are multiple reasons for your speakers not working properly. The main reasons for the speakers not working would be the following;
  • Something small must have gotten wedged inside of the speakers.
  • A type of liquid and/or sticky substance leaked into speakers.
  • Lots of pressurized force on upper screen(which could have also caused the damage done to the screen).
What I would recommend is make an appointment with "Nintendo customer service".

Not meaning to sound patronising, but have you powered it up again?? My daughter loses battery power quickly and needs to charge it often!

This option is only suitable for out of warranty devices as opening it violates the warranty.

Open the device and look for loosen or unplugged cables in the main bottom board. Usually this dont happen though opening and closing the unit whe it was not assembled correctly may cause the wires and conductors to loosen or even worst to get cut by the moving parts. So as you say nothing else was done with the unit between plays that is the only explanation I can guess from it.

The headset plug is in the bottom main board so no cables are required to get the audio there, though as the speakers are in the top, these require some flexible cables and conductors running throught the hinges to the top part.

Yes, here is a guide to dismantle an original Nintendo DS:

If yours is the NDS Lite, just find this video in youtube:

"Disassembling Nintendo DS Lite"

And after opening it you may need to replace or try to repair the audio plug. In case you cant, then you must take it out (desoldering it with the stuck stylus tip and the mute switch, which is embeded in the headphone jack) and you can have your audio back.
As the audio switch and the jack only work to mute the speakers audio usually when you plug a headphone then you can lack of it almost all times.

My Nintendo microphone


My Nintendo ds lite also would not respond to voices. I have brain age 2 and Zelda. In the Zelda options there is a mic test. This will show a graph bar that measures your voice. Well the mic was not working at all for either game. I simply took out the battery and held the power slide for a couple seconds. Amazingly the mic works now for both games. I do not know if moving the power slide is significant, but on computers to de-static them you remove all power sources(battery and ac adapter) and hold the power button for 10 seconds.
