Question about Televison & Video

Open Question

Recently purchased hk avr 1700 now spontaneously shuts off after 30 minutes, regardless of setting for sleep timer (on/0ff or any minute setting).

The amp has only analog input sound from my tv, and powers 5 speaker enclosures (front left/right, surround left/right and sub-woofer). There is no HDMI, optical or other cable attached. On initial set-up four nights ago everything seemed to work well enough on 5.1 surround setting. Over the weekend while the tv was on for longer periods of time, we experienced the amp turning itself off. We experimented with setting the off timer (all available settings), and it continues to turn off precisely 30 minutes after it's turned on.

SOURCE: how do I use the

Hello
Before going to set the timer, you have to set the current time. Set it according to the manual with you. If the timer function work properly, there must be an uninerrupted power supply also. If the power goes off, the set time will also get resetted, and improper function will occur.
After setting the present time, set the "on" time and "Off" time. The TV will switch on at that time you set, and will switch off automatically after the end time. OK.

My Cox HD/DVR controller will turn off but will not turn on my new HKAVR1700 using the AUX button on the Cox supplied URC-8820-Cisco remote.

This is a documented problem with the Harmon/Kardon AVR-1700 and the Cox remote. Here's how I solved it. On the HK1700, go to System Settings and turn on HDMI Link. This will allow your TV (if it has the feature) to put the HK in standby mode when you power down the TV. Go to your setting on your TV and turn on HDMI link, or equivalent. I have a Sony TV and the setting is called "Control For HDMI." Then, use code 0110 for your Cox remote. This code will only turn on the HK, not turn it off. BUT, the HDMI Link should put the HK into standby.

How do I set the sleep timer? We got the tv from a friend and it had no manuel.

Programming the Sleep Timer:

  1. Press and release the TV key.
  2. Press and hold the SLEEP key for three seconds. The illuminated component name turns on.
  3. Release the SLEEP key.
  4. Using the number keys, enter the desired time in minutes (from 1-99 minutes). To set the timer to an umber under 10 minutes, first press 0 and then the desired number (e.g.,05 for five minutes). The illuminated component name blinks with each key press.
  5. Once the second number is entered, the illuminated component name turns off.
Tip Any key press other than the number keys is ignored. If you don't enter the sleep time within 10 seconds after pressing the SLEEP key, you must start over at step 1. The illuminated component name blinks four times and then turns off, indicating your attempt to program the Sleep Timer has been unsuccessful.
  6. The Sleep Timer is now set.
  7. Leave remote aimed at the TV. Once the Sleep Timer is set, you can continue to use the remote without affecting the Sleep Timer. However, because the timing mechanism for the Sleep Timer is built into the remote itself, the remote must be in TV Mode and pointed at the TV to activate the Sleep Timer.
Note: If the ON·OFF key is pressed, the Sleep Timer is canceled.

If your set has a SLEEP TIMER function, yes. Simply set the timer (usually in 15 or 30 minute increments) and it will count down and shut the set off when it counts down to zero.
