Does the lid switch work? With the lid closed, put the unit to spin cycle. If it spins, the switch is good and you will need to replace the water inlet valve.
Here is the switch if you need it.
Here is the water valve if you should need it.

Possible that the water level sensor has failed and so does not trip the controller to shut off the inlet valve. The sensor is a pressure activated switch and you must be able to track it down and test the switch to work with air pressure. If so the switch must be replaced.

Kenmore washer 90 series continue to fill w/water. Load size won't stop the fill... had to shut off water source. won't get to agitate phase... just want to stay at fill stage... can drain, spin,...

Sounds like the fill switch needs to be replaced. A good way to test it is to set your machine on low fill and see if it fills past 3/4. If it does, it's the fill switch.

When the washer is ready to wash, the water keeps coming in to the washer, won't shut off

Open the control panel. Remove the plastic hose from the water level switch.
Blow through the hose to remove any blockage from the air bell at the tub. Reattach the hose and set the machine for a SPIN cycle and run the machine. Then re-fill with water.
Double check the hose for any kinks or pin holes.
If this does not correct the problem, the water level switch will need replacing.

Washer won't fill. will only agitate or spin

Set the washer to the position where it should be filling up with water. With the solenoid leads unplugged check if its getting 120 volts to it using a voltmeter or a circuit tester. The solenoid I am mentioning about is the one that opens up to let the water into the tub. When 120 volts is applied to it the solenoid opens up the water valve. It is located on the back of the machine. Then we go from there.
