Question about Kenmore Microwave Ovens

Open Question

I have a kenmore microwave rangehood. It is recirculated air exhaust but does not move any air when using the stove top. what is wrong with it.

The microwave range hood is model # 592.85613-0 Could it be that there are deflectors or parts which need to be changed so air can flow from under the micro rangewood thru the grease filters the out the front top of the unit.

The inspector is correct, air should be coming through the top louvers, although you sometimes will have a little air coming from the sides and back. Drop the microwave and see which way the blower is rotated, towards the louvers or towards the back or top. Some units also have a panel that blocks the venting from going the wrong way. I purchased this microwave a few years ago but not until I bought a new stove did I notice that the exhaust fan does not draw the moisture up the chimney. The fan works, but nothing is being drawn up.

Jean, there's little information in your query, so I'll have to guess...

Many "microwave hood" combinations can be used as "recirculating" or as actual exhaust. It sounds like yours is set to recirculate. I don't know what make/model you have, but you might look in the documentation that came with it for how to switch it over.

Yes, there is a thermostat device located on the magnetron. It will open up (turning off the magnetron) when it gets too hot, and it will reset automatically after it cools back down (in 5 to 15 minutes). The question is, Why is is over-heating? Usually it is caused by the exhaust fan being turned the wrong way. (For example, it may be set to exhaust the air out through the top of the microwave, but you don't have a vent there.) That fan can be turned to exhaust air out the top, out the back, or recirculate the air back through the front of microwave. It's easy to turn it around - the hard part is that you have to take the microwave down to be able to pull the fan out and rotate it the right direction.

My frigidaire microwave fan turned on by it self. Won't turn off. Blowing air above Microwave

Try unplugging it for a few seconds or turning off the circut breaker to it. This usually resets the unit.

When turning Fan on (any speed), top vent grille blowing lots of air, but not pulling air underneath

some microwaves vent to the exterior. check outside for a vent. If it is a recirculating model, perhaps the filters are plugged, the vent pathway is blocked (packaging material) or a loose panel at the back so that the exhaust fan air is leaking out somewhere else. I don't know what else it could be unless the fan is loose on the motor shaft and the fan motor is running but the fan blades are not moving air.

Blower motor on above stove microwave not running

The dual fan in the back is the vent / exhaust / hood fa. It will run when you turn it on, or if the stove top gets too hot.

The other fan is the magnetron cooling fan, and it will only run when you are cooking. If it is not running, your magnetron can be destroyed.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here. That may help you a lot.

Kenmore microhood

"Microhood" seems to be a slang term for the "microwave hood" (hood fan or exhaust fan) which is normally part of an over-the-range microwave oven or range. But these should be available separately, as I seem to recall. I would contact home centers such as Lowe's, Home Depot (if they still exist), etc., or a local appliance store.
