If this is your primary hard drive with an operating system you will have to format it using a third party disk and change the boot order to boot from the cd/dvd drive. If its not getting recognised you wont be able to format. To try to fix the driver issue This will automatically search for and find the correct driveryou will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point. Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.

...UNABLE TO CLEAN error code 50'' my printer is

The hard drives are in a USB externa enclosure, set up as RAID 1 and are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I do not save any TM back ups to them and they work after a restart and then sometime later start to provide the error message anytime I try to save to them. A restart usually fixes the issue for a finite period of time. Disk Utility runs and tells me the disks are fine. I never have trouble accessing data from them.

Format harddrive

What OS are you using?

In Windows, go to the disk management utility and see if the disk is listed. (In Win 7, this is Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Create and format hard disk partitions.) For XP and Vista, the directions are similar but do differ a bit. Look at the bottom of the window, to see the list of disks. (Disk 0 is your main hard disk; do not reformat this by accident.)

Assuming the disc is correctly connected to the enclosure and is seen by the computer, you should see it listed as a removable drive. Note: you may need to change the USB port. The MX100 is an enclosure for 3.5" hard disks and needs the AC cord plugged in as well.

You may want to connect and turn on the enclosure when the computer is off, then turn it on. Then turn on the computer. This will hopefully allow the USB drivers to note the new device.

For the Mac OS, look for the Disk Utility.

If you still don't see the drive, check that the cover (and plugs) are completely seated. (Turn off the enclosure first.) Try the hard disk in another enclosure or a USB/SATA hard drive adapter. (If you have a desktop with a free SATA data port and power connector, try connecting the disk directly to the computer. (You need to determine if the enclosure is faulty or the disk itself is bad.)

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with your OS and if you see the disk in the disk management utility, if you need additional assistance.

Cindy Wells
(This enclosure will work with older versions of Windows, back to Win98Se. However, I don't believe all of those versions came with disc formatting utilities. In that case, you would need a third-party partitioning software (Partition Magic, Paragon Partition Manager). If this disk was in another computer and you want to save the data, try copying the data before reformatting. This may be easier to do with the USB/SATA adapter or the direct connection to the motherboard of a desktop.)

The light is on but the hard drive is not being recognized on the computer or the tv, it was dropped only once. there is a humming sound but no response. no more pictures or movies. is this possible to...

Good Day Daniellevion!

Have you seen a hard disk inside your computer? That is exactly what is inside in an external drive.

You mentioned that you dropped the external drive once, and that could be the reason why your computer was unable to recognized it as external drive.

Danielle! The connectors of the hard disk inside the Samsung External Drive (or other term is hard disk enclosure) might be loosened.

If you can open the enclosure and expose the two connectors, disconnect them and reseat properly.

That might fix it!

Starting yesterday, I've started to have this problem: "You need to format the disk in F: before you can use it" now what's odd is that it's been working fine for two years, now suddenly it's...

This can happen when a drive has become corrupted.

Try connecting it to a different computer, but if that doesn't work:

You can try to reformat it by right-clicking "My Computer" -> Click Manage -> Click on Disk Management -> right-clicking on the F: Drive and choosing to Format.

It will wipe all the data but may get it working again.

Purchase a new "empty" enclosure, and "transplant" the disk-drive from inside your enclosure into the new enclosure. Cost will be $30 to $40, but all your files on your disk-drive will be accessible.

Why i cant format my seagate 500gb potable hard drive, when format it in quick format its show an error that the hard drive not successfully formatted. what should i do? please help me, i need it asap....

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is "dying".
If the warranty still is valid, exercise the warranty to get it replaced, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, open the enclosure, remove the disk-drive, and take the disk-drive to a computer-store. Buy a new, compatible, drive, and then "transplant" it into the enclosure, to "revive" your external file-storage appliance.

I am using Fantom Titanium 250GB External (TFDU25072B) Hard Drive i am not able to formate it i am using Windows XP Sp2 its giving me error " unable to formate " even i am not able to formate it...

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is problematic.
Open the enclosure, to get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access Fantom's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive. If the warranty still is valid, they will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and transplant it into the enclosure, to "resuscitate" your device.

The drive is not listed in

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the LaCie on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit, and not a computer system problem.

There are two possibilities:

The LaCie USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. New Lacie are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be LaCie.
Check if your LaCie is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.
