B> Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

SOURCE: Toshiba Satellite A60 powers up then off after 2 seconds

Mark F K, truong808, does the cooling fan(s) blow or come on? If not, the system will sense tha ti is overheating and will shut down to prevent further damage. Also, a thermal sensor may be failing on the Mobo and thus keep the fan from initiating. The cheapest fix is to replace the fan. Worst case scenario is another Mobo may be the fix.

Remove the battery and just leave it off the computer, then plug in the power cord and try it. If it works with no battery...the battery is completely dead and you need to replace.

Compaq 1420 nx turns on then turns off immediately

A brief primer if I may;

Electrolytic Capacitors are used on the motherboard, and in the Power Supply, in the Compaq Presario 1420nx Desktop PC;

HP Support > Compaq Presario SR1420nx Desktop PC > Main Support page,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=457247&

Product information > Product specifications > Motherboard Specifications, P4GV-LA (Guppy),

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00363478&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=457247

Scroll down to the motherboard Photo.

General example of a Switched-Mode Power Supply, (SMPS), case open,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ATX_power_supply_interior-1000px_transparent.png

Personal computers have used this style of Power Supply, for quite some time.
The one in your computer is just an ATX style, and is the type used in MANY personal computers. (Not Small Form Factor, however)

THIS IS NOT an invite to open your Power Supply, and attempt repair.
The capacitors used are Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors.
The blue ones marked by the letter B, are high voltage. MAY have Up To 100 Volts stored.

Your fingers touch the terminals on the bottom, of one of these babies; the shock can be BAD to FATAL!

Your fingers touch a circuit, that one or more capacitors are in, and the shock can be BAD to FATAL.

There is a Proper method to discharge them, BEFORE working on the unit. Am not going to post.
(Does NOT involve a metal screwdriver, or other metallic object! Good way to have hot molten metal spray in your face!)

The method of repair is to REPLACE.

Inside an Electrolytic Capacitor is Electrolytic Paste.
This paste breaks down over time. Chemical composition breaks down.

Computer engineers know this, and use capacitors that are rated at twice, or 200 percent; of what is needed.
This way when the capacitor breaks down to 50 percent good, it is still 100 percent good for the application it is used in.

Unplug an electronic unit from power, and the chemical composition of the paste breaks down more rapidly. All electronic units need a trickle charge when being stored. (Pawn shops know this)

To summarize;
FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions after unplugging your computer from power, BEFORE reaching inside your computer. (Don't know, and would like to? Post in a Comment)

Check the 'caps' on the motherboard.
Note* Sometimes the Electrolytic Paste dries up, and shows NO outward visual signs of failure.

'Caps' on motherboard found to be good, suspect the Power Supply.
I can guide you in testing it, or you may have a KNOWN to be good, Compatible power supply, from a working computer that you can borrow for a test unit.

When I plug the unit into power, the CPU fan runs very fast but no boot, and then when I press power on the fan slows down and the PC boots normally. It shuts down in about 30 minutes with no sign of...

Sounds like you are overheating. One way to tell if it's overheating is you say it will run for about 30 minutes then shuts down. When it shuts down try rebooting to see if the boots successfully. If it fails to boot successfully right after it shut down then you are probably overheating. If you wait awhile to let it cool down for 30 minutes or so and if you reboot and it does it successfully you definitely have a overheating problem. If I remember correctly all those compaq sr series have loud and fast running fans. Computers overheat because of three reasons for the most part: 1) A fan has stopped working. 2) The Thermal Paste on the CPU and Heat Sink has dried up or is not thick enough to keep the unit cool. 3) Dust has clogged the fan vents and inside the computer. Fortunately for you desktops don't have to be completely disassembled like laptops to get to the fan, CPU and heatsink. Just pop the case and you'll see the components attached to the motherboard

HP COMPAQ NC6000 WONT COME UP; FANRUNS AND ORANGE LIGHT FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS AND THEN SHUTS OFF EVEN ON AC POWER OR BATTERY.

Hi DD,
Does the cursor blink on the screen before turn off?
There could be several causes for your PC's problem. The major ones though are:-
  1. A virus invasion of your PC.
  2. Your Operating System/boot log has corrupted.
Turn on the PC and press f8 on startup.Select to open on safe mode.Choose to open on a previously good working Operating System.
If this works and the PC opens, you may have to transfer your important files to an external drive then try repairing the Operating System or probably re-install it again. But first:-
  • Check the RAM[s] and make sure they are properly seated in their slots.Your Notebook has 2 memory slots under the keyboard positioned one on top of the other. The expansion slot is the one on top of the primary memory slot.Access them by flipping over the laptop and unscrewing the back cover. There in the middle is the only compartment housing the RAM[s] and the PC's CMOS battery.Unscrew.Remove the RAM[s],clean their slots and the fix them again making sure they properly fit.
  • Check the hard disks power supply.Disconnect it and re-connect it again.
Hope this helps.Thanks!

Does the roll over switch have to have power for the fuel pump to operate

Here's how it works:

1. you turn key to ON. PCM (engine computer) power relay acitvates PCM.

2. PCM then turns on fuel pump relay for 5 SECONDS. Then it shuts fuel pump off unless engine is running.

3. During starter crank mode, the pump runs all the time.

4. So power (12 volts) goes through to Inertia Switch, which is resettable, then to fuel pump.

If you said what make, model, year, I could send the wiring diagram.

PS. It's not a roll over switch. It's for being hit by another car. A steel ball insode hitsd a target and breaks the electrical circuit.

please rate help. thanks

Playing videogames and multitasking then it freezes (Crashes) then i have to hold down the power S/W to shut off then reboot. I have a Compaq Presario S4020WM. Have 2 512 ddr ram cards. have AMD anthlon...

Assuming your are not overclocking either the CPU or the GPU, and you have ruled out any driver/software problems.... It sounds like you may have the dreaded DB's (Dust Bunnies), or an under rated power supply (or a little of both). If you are overclocking, that may definitely be the cause (tone it back a bit). If you've had ANY driver problems, revert to your old drivers and see if that helps...

If you haven't cleaned out the insides of your computer for a couple of years, dust bunnies tend to accumulate, and make cooling components a tough job for any fan in there to do. Use DRY compressed air to clean it out with (an air compressor will work, just make sure it ain't spitting out ANY water). BTW, NEVER use a vacuum cleaner, it WILL KILL your computer (static buildup inside the hose will zap components).

If your power supply isn't way overrated for the load your trying to pull out of it, and you have a few dust bunnies in it, it too may need a good blast of fresh air. You may need to disassemble it (unplug it from the wall first) to get it properly clean, it's not as hard you think. Usually just 4 or 5 screws (not including the 4 or 5 that are holding it to your case). Just take note of how wires are routed in/out of it when disassembling it.

If after a through cleaning, your still having problems, then your power supply may be under rated for the power your trying to pull from it (or it says that it is "rated correctly", but is a cheap POS). Check your video card power requirements against your power supply, that's the thing that's going to **** the most amps. I like to use "name brand" power supplies rated at least 30% higher than what I plan to **** out of them.

BTW, make windows do a check disk (right click on C drive --> properties --> Tools tab --> Error checking button) to make sure you haven't corrupted your master file tables (MFT). It won't let you do it when windows running, but it will ask to do it on the next reboot (tell it yes).

The controller will not turn on. Green light on back comes on but when we turn on the unit, the fan starts briefly and then the power cuts off.

Bad Power Supply. Weak Voltage power rail.

Not enough power to turn the Processor on, and keep it on.

1) ALL those LED lights together, use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts

3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is. (Older Processors use less Wattage)

The Compaq Presario SR1810NX desktop computer, comes with an AMD Sempron 3200+, processor.

(Uses the Socket 939 processor socket)

[Maximum operating capability is a 1.8GigaHertz frequency rate.
1.8GHz

Giga = Approximately 1 Billion
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second.
Frequency Rate is correct computer speak for 'Speed'
The AMD Sempron 3200+ processor, can operate at a maximum frequency rate of 1.8 Billion Cycles per Second ]

The AMD Sempron 3200+, can use up to 62 Watts,

When you press the plastic Power On button, you are contacting a Power On switch inside it.
(Typical ATX Power On switch,

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html )

When an ATX power supply is plugged into power, there is a 5 Volt Standby power, present inside the power supply.

Pressing the momentary contact power on switch, closes a circuit that directs the 5 Volt Standby power to 'excite' the power supply, and turn it on.

The first chip to receive power is the BIOS chip.
[Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit.
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System]

BIOS,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS ]

BIOS looks to see what devices are installed, does a Ram Memory count, TURNS the Processor on, and hands the computer over to the Operating System.
(Windows XP is one example of an O/S. Operating System)

The LED lights receive power, so do the fans, and the Harddrive. When it's time for the Processor to kick on, there isn't enough power, and the Power Supply 'falls to it's knees'.

Replace the Power Supply.
It's just one of the basic ATX power supply's that are readily available in a multitude of places.
The Wattage is 300 Watts.

The ATX form factor for this power supply, (Size and shape), is approximately 6 inches Long, 6 inches Wide, and 3-1/2 inches Tall.
