I got a singer 185k green model. The tension screw was off and I'm having aproblem getting it back on because I'm a scared it's going to strip. Is there a special trick to put it back on.

It seems that I'm not allowed to reply using the word you used above beginning with an "s" that you're concerned about. I'm going to call it a device instead.

I just downloaded your instruction manual to find out what your tension device looks like, and it looks like it's a knob with a straight-slot device in the center. Looks like it worked itself loose over time and vibration.

There is a trick to seating a device properly that has worked for me. To tighten a device, you turn it to the right. But to make sure it's seated correctly first, try turning it 1/2 turn to the LEFT before you start. It tends to help it to seat.

If when you start to turn it in it stops unless you apply a lot of force, that means you're stripping it. Stop, unwind, and start from the beginning.

When I got the machine it was so dirty you could not turn it. I cleaned and oiled it and it turns free now but it breaks the threed at the needle as soon as you try to sew.

This would probably be caused by the top thread tension device being too tight, dirty or gummed up. If the machine was really dirty then good chance the tension device will be gunked up too.

Have you cleaned the top tension device too?

I'm not really familar iwth the Consew but on domestic machines where the tension device is two metal discs with a screw/dial to tension them, you turn the knob down to zero to open up the device as much as possible, then clean between where the thread runs by flossing it with a selvage edge of clean fabric. If you can do its and black stuff comes onto your fabric, then keep cleaning.

You may want to dip the fabric into denatured alcohol first, this will help degum the tension discs too, this will help clean the gunk off the metal.

Why most of the time upper thread or sometimes lower thread loose while stitching though bobbin thread rolling is tightand tension is 8

Probably not in tension correctly, always thread the top with the pressure foot raised so that the thread seats correctly into the tension device. Turn it back to 5 and try again, you shouldn't need to turn tension up to 8. It is more likely that the tension device is dirty and needs cleaning.

Visit this website for good tension tips,

or has lots of good help too.

To clean your tension device, turn it to zero, then floss between the discs with the selvage edge of a clean piece of cotton fabric, if you get black gunk out, then keep cleaning. You can wet the fabric edge with denatured alcohol too, just don't get onto plastic bits. Thread, especially cheap quality, will shed dye particles and thread fibres, which will build up in the tension device with time, impairing how it works. So it is always important to read your machine manual and clean and oil it as the manual shows, at least every 3 months, or each time you get the machine out to use it. This prolongs its life.

I have a Kenmore 385.16126200. The tension is too loose. I have already turned the dial all the way to 9. Is there something else I could do?

I would check to make sure the spring is working in the dial, check to see if the dial is actually closing around, if not could be a bad spring in it. Also check to make sure the thread is totally in the dial. Hope this helps.

My machine won't stop sewing - even after I turn it off. When I turn it on again, the machine goes through the sewing motions. I have looked into the bobbin area to see if anything was in there. It's...

This sounds like an electrical problem and may be still covered by the warranty.

Any repair may void the warranty unless it is done by an authorized Kenmore tech.

Take the machine in for repair as a saftey issue may well be in question.

Why am I getting puckering and loops on thr underside of the seam? Please!

The most likely cause is that the top thread is not under tension.

You need to review your threading up; raise the presser foot first so that the tension device is open. Then thread from the thread spool to the needle as per your manual, paying attention to the thread take up lever, and the tension device and ensuring the thread goes into all the thread eyes on the path.

A good way to check if the top tension device is working is the following:
Turn tension to number 4, thread up to just before the needle bar thread guides, then lower the pressure foot to engage the tension and pull downwards on the thread. It should feel very firm and be difficult to pull. If this is not happening at all and you can see that the thread has seated into the tension device fully, then the device itself is faulty and it will need to be serviced.

Error message on Brother SE-270D sewing machine

The safety device will activate if the machine has a bind or is unable to run at correct speed. If you turn the handwheel is it tight/hard to turn? if it is than thats it. Now what is binding the machine has to be diagnosed.
