Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

My dryer stopped and a click sound heard around the timer when the start button pushed. There is power. A few experts says it seems to be the thermal fuse.

It took me several days to open the panels, because the back panel of my model cannot be opened by unscrewing like in the videos shown a lot in the YouTube. It would have been really easy in that way. I finally opened the front panel below the laundry door AND the control panel on top of the machine. I know I didn't need to open both, but I didn't know which to open because some say it's next to the thermal unit and others say I need to open control panel. OK, now I hope I am almost there. Where is the fuse located?

Just stopped working. No burning smell. When start button pushed, some kind of tiny "click" sound heard around the timer.

The click is most likely the timer motor moving the dial on the timer. The motor circuit on American dryers is 120 volts whilst the heater requires 240 volts to operate its 5k element. The motor circuit always has the fuse in it. The heating element has limits mounted on it but they only kill power to the element and not the motor. Fuses are usually located on the blower housing next to the control thermostat. MORE HERE

The problem is usually caused by a blown thermal fuse. Disconnect power then access and bypass the thermal fuse on the blower housing. The blower housing is located on the rear left bottom.

Bypass the thermal fuse by disconnecting the wires and connecting them together. Insulate them properly and plug the dryer back in. The thermal fuse is indeed blown and needs to be replaced if the dryer starts. Do not use the dryer with the thermal fuse bypassed due to fire hazards.

The dryer will not start, you can hear timer.

your problem could be : Door switch, Motor, Thermal Fuse, Timer.

I would start with Door switch and Thermal Fuse.

Just stopped working still has power-inside light comes on and timer makes noise when you turn dial but does not start when you push start button

This sounds like the door switch. But it could also be the non-resettable thermal fuse inside. Open the door, depress the door switch until it clicks, and while holding it in see if the dryer starts.

Dryer Won't Start

Make sure it has power. Then:Check the door switch. A little lever sticking down through top right of door opening. If it is not there you will need new door switch(sometimes the little lever breaks off). If it is there and does not click when you press it in you need a new door switch. if it clicks when you close the door then you have a bad thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is found by taking the back of the dryer off. The fuse is an oblong white plastic piece with 2 wires attached.

Door switch part number 3406109
Thermal fuse part number 3392519

the start button activates a realy inside the control panel
the relay latches to supply heavy current to motor and heater, until door switch or timer switch break the latching circuit
If relay is on its last legs, it could be causing delay in starting, not closing secondary
the relay is represented by the dashed switches at the right of this maytag wiring diagram, note that it has no relevance to physical position of components
cc57668.jpg the relay in maytags looks like this
