Question about Toshiba 50HP66 50 in. Plasma Television

Toshiba 50hp66 Plasma repeats power sequence without turning on

Problem is the TV wont turn on. Prior to not turning on the screen flickered black and white with a clicking sound. Now when I plug the tv in a power cycle of clicks are initiated. After a few clicks there is a few second buzz and the cycle continues. What is observed during the cycling is the red standby light illuminated which switches to green and then turns off after buzz. With back open, the clicks come from the power board as 2 green lights illuminate and then the Y-SUS board begins to buzz.

A case of which came first the chicken or the egg, Power supply board may be the issue or the sustain board--have you looked for the usual bad caps on the power board?

I appreciate the response. I did inspect for the obvious signs and pulled the power board and ctrl board to inspect back side. No visible signs. I can pull the Sustain as you suggest. I was hoping someone knew if it was the chicken or egg first? I guess the answer to that is a lot too expect. Thanks again. It will be a few days before I can perform exploratory surgery but will post a response.

Another thought...is it possible to test a capacitor/mosfet/transistor while attached to board for basics such as continuity with a multimeter or simple home made device? My objective is to isolate board and find someone to repair or purchase replacement board.

Sounds like a system failure - one of the controller boards may have gone bad. If the unit is still under warranty, contact Toshiba for warranty service. Otherwise you will need to contact one of the authorized service centers or your local TV repair guy to arrange for repair.

Hi

There are some factors of this kind of problem.

First you could have a failure in the power supply. Next could be the main board. Lastly you could have a problem with the panel itself, this would mean a new set for sure because the part cost is more than a new set.

However try troubleshooting the problem before spending money on repairing or replacing the television. Possibly you can restore the picture and sound to your television ...

Verify the TV is powered on by pressing the power button on the TV's remote or the front panel of the set. This may seem like an obvious step, but many TVs are equipped with a standby light that will illuminate if the TV is turned off, making it appear that the TV is on when it is not.Cycle through the TV's video inputs to verify that your TV is set to the right one. For instance, if you are attempting to use a digital cable converter box that is plugged into the Video 1 input and the TV is set to a Video 2 input that has nothing plugged into it, the TV will not display any picture or sound and may even say "No signal" on the screen. To cycle through the inputs, use the input selection button, typically labeled "input," "source," "TV/video" or the like.

Re-seat the video and audio input connections to verify a loose cable is not causing the TV's loss of signal. If you have a coaxial cable connected from your wall cable jack directly into the TV, it may have come loose thereby eliminating all picture and sound on the TV. Locate the connection cable or cables of whatever device you are attempting to watch and unplug them from where they plug into the TV. Plug them back in and check for a signal. If there is still no picture or sound at this point, the best option is to contact technical support for further assistance.

I think that the pop you heard was an electrolytic capacitor blowing its top on the picture frame board. If you are able to check this for yourself by looking on the board for the one/s with a bulging top or are a brownish/black colour like something has caught fire. And also in this situation smell can be of great help as it will smell burnt out but PLEASE before putting your nose or anything else in the tv take all necessary precautions against electric shock and discharge any electrolytic capacitors in the vicinity. If you are not able to do this yourself find a competant technician. Hope this helps.

That problem is caused by the Y Sustainer board.
