Re: Unable to get to brushes on DeWalt DW959 drill type...
The brushes are made to slide into the side of the motor. gently pull up on them. Also I would recommend that you go to Dewaltservicenet.com and type in your model number for a parts explosion and part number for replacement brushes. Let me know

The brush holders are located at the back end of the motor. Depending on which model you have, you may have to only remove the end cap at the back of the motor to get access to the brush/holder set. Or you may have to split the entire clamshell to get at them. Be careful if you have to remove the transmission, there are a lot of small parts that can fall out and they all have to go back in correctly to make it work.
go to Dewaltservicenet.com and in the middle of the page at the bottom type in your model number and it will take you to a page so you can bring up a schematic on this tool. let me know if you need any more help
Some cordless Dewalt drills do not have open motors allowing access to the brushes. However there are a few styles that do.
If you want to check, open your drill. Remove the screws from the housing. Then remove half of the housing. You can see the motor at the back of the tool. If there are vents at the back of the motor you may be able to see the brushes the removable type are connected to a gray or tan piece of plastic mounted at the back of the motor.
If the brushes are from a removable style you can purchase a brush set. If they are hidden in the motor. You will have to change the whole motor.
You can check the Dewalt Service Net web site to find out.
