Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP w/n close door

When the door closes it will open again as if there is something in the way. It will not open all the way back up so the next time it tries to close it re-opens. I inherited the opener w/o manuals. I can adjust the chain to get the door to open once. I have tried adjusting the open/close distance settings but the opener doesn't seem to hold the completely open setting and gets worse with each attempt to close.

We purchased the house 1.5years ago. Not sure of the age.

  • tntsnyder Jan 17, 2009

I adjusted the chain so the door started in the down position. without the adjustment the door was in a partial up position, when I hit the button, the door went down and right back up to the partial up position, sometimes not as high as the previous time. This was before adjusted any travel limits

I took it off the rear sprocket and repositioned it in the down position so it was in sync with the motor.

I have the same exact problem. I am new to this home, no manual. The garage door opens fine but stops shortly after closing like something is in the way. Cleaned and readjusted the lenses with no help. I just went through the e-mail string and have not read a solution.

I kept the door disconnected from the opener and tried it multiple tmies without any problems. As soon as I hooked the door up the problem returned. It didn't come all the way up so when I closed it, it hit bottom too soon and reopened short of where it did the first time. I finally took time to tear the opener apart and noticed all kinds of plastic shavings in the housing. The gear on the main shaft is getting tore up. Hopefully replacing the gear will correct the problem.

Why did you need to touch the chain. do you have it out of sync with motor. you may need to get motor down or up and reinstall chain. what concerns me is you may have messed things up more by playing with travel limits.

again I ask, why did you adjust chain?

  • marty metzger Jan 17, 2009

what do you mean by adjust chain. Tension? Or you took it off rear sprocket and repositioned? Need more info.

  • marty metzger Jan 18, 2009

yeh, you repositioned chain. so now what happens.

for $30 you can buy a complete rebuild kit, both gears and bearing. If you are handing and have basic tools, you can do on your bench in an hour or two, or go buy whole new unit at sears for $150. If you rebuild, just make sure you sync chain with sprocket location. Tie chair to rail, loosen adjusting bolt and take down motor adter tying rail to ceiling/supports. Not hard, just pay attention fo way parts come off and reinstall in reverse. kit comes with parts you do not use for all models. good luck.

Two things. Check for a broken door spring. If okay, remove the cover from the motor housing and check for a bad drive gear. This is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. If it is going bad it should be obvious.

I just installed a sears craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener. when i close the garage door with the remote the chain track bends up just about 12 inches before it closes all the way, and this only happens...

What is wrong is you need to adjust the limit on the door when it comes up. What it is doing is coming to far back on the track. You need to push the back limit forward away from the motor so the door does not come back and drop down on the inside of the garage. The opener is trying to push the door up hill to get it to close that is why you are getting the bend in the track.

Good Luck

My craftsman 1/2 hp garage door starts to close and then opens up

I had a simular issue, except mine was that the previous owner decided to mess with all the settings and mounts and screwed everything up.

The problem isn't your force sensors its your downwards stopping sensor on the opposite side of the opener. For me I had to take the entire panel off and replace the sensor back in its holder, but try adjusting that sensor setting (clockwise goes down, counterclockwise goes up).

If that doesn't work then i dunno:)

Also set both force settings in between 0-1, for some reason with mine if i set it higher it would set them off....

I have a craftsman garage door opener (1/2 hp) won't close proper

Check your door sensors. They have probably been bumped. Tweak them until they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.

Craftsman 1/2 HP door opener bounces back open

Hello,

There should be 2 sensors on the bottom of your door on the inside, 1 on the right side and 1 on the left side.
These sensors serve 1 purpose to send a beam or reflection to each other.
If something is blocking this reflection or is in front of the sensor the door will always come back up.
It is a safety feature so nothing or no one gets hurt when the door is closing!
