Question about Sony KDS-R50XBR1 50" HDTV
Most but not all of these sets have a reset---with set off and Sony remote hit display, 5, volume up, and POWER.
Set should come on in the tech menu---hit 8 on the remote and you should see the word RESET IN RED, then hit enter to complete the reset.
If the green band was there before it may be a optical light engine bad, these sets are well known for this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did find elsewhere on this site that my particuliar unit has an "optical block" service enhancement warranty issue that entitles me to a free repair.

Call Sony, there is a recall on the Light Engine in these units and it will be replaced for free. Sony will cover all costs. I had mine done for the same reason.

I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working. The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode. Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it. Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced. If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp. The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual. I hope this helps you.

Looking from front of TV, on the right side there is one screw holding the lamp panel, remove this screw and panel, lamp is behind panel, removes easily.
