Wrong Bi Metal Replacement

Hi All, There was some problem of Main part of the fridge was not cooling but the freezer nicely. I realized that due to over frosting, vent that take cool air to main section got chocked up with frost hence not cooling in main section. 1. Checked Defrost Timer: I found it working correctly. Alternatively passing power to both. Compressor and Heater both. 2. Checked Defrost Heater: Checked with Continuity meter lights. It showed continuity. 3. Checked Defrost Bi Metal thermostat: Kept in Ice filled water and checked continuity. Did not show it. Went to market and tried to find new Bi Metal Thermostat did not find the right one. written on bi metal :-11N8232 I was handed over the different one. some XXN0916 (XX- i forgot it). I have already replaced that but now cooling is very minimal in the fridge. Where am i wrong. Do bimetal are differ with their code? Does any one know how to read this bimetal code? Please opine. Regards Fridge: Samsung Double Door Top Freezer (SR37EMA)

SOURCE: Freezer gets cold, Refrigerator Hot

First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer.

Now, why is that cold air not getting over to the Ref side?
1. The little door is not open.
check your control setting. You can't see the door but, you should be able to feel air coming through the channel on the Ref side.

2. The fan in the freezer is not working.
You can hear this fan running when you open the freezer.

3. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice which won't let the fan circulate the air over to the Ref side.
This is a failure of the defrost system which consist of the defrost timer, heater, and thermo disc.

Also, If you replaced the evaporator fan then you got a good look at the cooling coils. Look at these coils while it is running. There should be a light coat of frost on all the coils. If this frost line is only 3/4 or 1/2 or any amount less than full coverage of the coils then the system has a coolant leak.

Directly under these coils is the drain pan and drain hole in the middle. This area should be clear of any ice or debris.

SOURCE: GE Fridge not cooling well, frost in freezer, back wall and coils

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

SOURCE: Frigidaire plht189sska top freezer fridge problem.

If the defrost heating element, defrost timer or evaporater fan weren't working, you'd develop a block of ice on the evaporator. Is the compressor running? If it is, it might have bad valves from the frost buildup scenario. Liquid refrigerant could have gotten to the suction valves. The sealed system should have a five year warranty. Might be time to call a pro

Many Amana model fridges have the freezer fan wired through the bi-metal thermostat that is clipped to the evaporator. Either your compressor has a bad start device and that is why it is not cooling, or the compressor IS running and the unit has lost its refrigerant charge. Running compressor with no cooling = buy a new fridge.
Compressor hot, but not running = start relay replacement to get the compressor going. Start Device 8201786

My Amana refridgerator does not cool but the freezer works

If you have noticed a rise in temperature in the fridge, and there seems to be fromst building up in the freezer than your problem is one or more parts of the defrost system is malfunctioned and in return your problem arises. There are three parts to the system, the defrost timer or in some cases control board, defrost thermostat also known as a bi-metal, and the defrost heater. The defrost system is set up to operate as so. The defrost timer or control board will turn the machine off, in some cases every 8 hours, some 12. During this time period the defrost heaters, located behind the freezer wall and rest underneath the evaporator, yet wires to them run up the side of it, are energized and emit heat that raises upward to melt the ice that has formed on the evaporator coils. The bi-metal or defrost thermostat is at the top of the evaporator. When the heat from the heater starts to reach the bi-metal, it breaks the circuit turning the heater off. The whole purpose of this is because the freezer cool the refridgerator side by drawing air across the coils and blowing to the other side via the evap fan motor. In my opinion, if you change one part of the defrost system change them all because usually when one part fails another will follow, so save yourself the time and the food loss, the cost difference is minute.

Hi, The back side of the freezer is covering with white frost and both parts - the refrigerator and the freezer don't cool up. We tried many times to defrost and clean it up generally, to balance...

Your bi metal defrost thermistat sounds like its out. Do the coils of the freezer Ice up? The heat may be out or the defrost timer. Most of the time its just the bi metal. You have 2 choices. If you have a backup fridge move your food to the backup . You mainly want to worry about parishables. Dairy and meat condiments not so much.To check the defrost timer all you have to do is see if it cycles. they cycle evry 8,10,12, or 24 hrs. If the fridge is shutdown for anywhere from 8-30 minutes. Shutdown is where the fan in freezer is not running neither is the compressor. sometimes if you listen in the freezer you can hear a sizzling noise. Its where frost is landing on the heater. If is shutsdown and than kicks back on by itself than the timer is good. If you have a meter to test continuity you can test the heater when replacing the bi metal.

To fix this you have first get the bi metal. When you have the part you will want to get a few things together. A couple of bath towels, a hair dryer, phillips screw driver or 1/4 inch nut driver sometimes both.

Once the perishables are in your backup or if you have no backup than you want to work fast. empty out freezer or atleast enough to access the back panel. Unplug fridge. Remove the racks and the baskets. Remover the 4 screws sometimes phillips and 1/4 nut. pull panel out sometimes you will need to remove the side rail you will see if you need to. take towel and place over drain plug to absorb most of the water. Take hair dryer and start drying. Be careful not to get to close to wires or walls in freezer. melt all the ice until there is nomore dripping down off the coils. Ice will be behind so make sure you get it all our you will be doing all this again. Once all the ice is melted install new bi metal its the round disc shaped with two wires coming off the coils. Make sure you put the new bi metal exactly where you removed the old one. If you have a meter you can test the heater at this point. Test both ends of the heat if its a bar heater the wires run along side the coils if its a glass heater under each side of the heater where the pink and blue wires go into test to see if good. Once you have all new parts on put back together plug in and wait about 2 hrs to let it cool down. If the problem persist or you run into any problems feel free to contact me.

My fridge is not getting cold. Adjusted temp. Freezer is fine

There a few things that could be going on. First thing to check for is if the fan in the freezer compartment is running. If it is, while you have the freezeropen, look on the back wall to see if you h ave a build up of ice/ frost on it. If you deo this means you have a defrost problem which consist of defrost heaters, bi-metal thermostat which connect to the heaters and a defrost timer. Depending on the machine, which part wrong could very. Most commonly it will be the defrost timer and or bi-metal thermostat. If none of this is happening the air damper which lets air flow from the freezer side to the fridge could be shut not letting cool air to pass.

Refrigerator Compartment not cooling properly: freezer compartment working properly

Check the freezer section for frost build up, there is probably a problem with the defrost cycle. 1 of 3 things defrost bi metal would be the likely problem. The back panel in the freezer should be removed to see if there is too much frost.

there are two more items that needs to be tested...

Freezer compartment of fridge freezer working ok but fridge section not cooling

ON ALMOST ALL REFRIGERATORS, THE FRESH FOOD SECTION GETS ITS COOLING FROM THE FREEZER BY AIR CIRCULATION. IF THE AIR ISN'T CIRCULATING, FINDING THE CAUSE WILL REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE MOST FREQUENT FAILURE IS THE DEFROST CYCLE AND IS EASILY DIAGNOSED BY LOOKING IN THE FREEZER SECTION. IF FROST IS PRESENT ON THE BACK WALL, (OR FLOOR OF OLD MAGIC CHEF TOP MOUNT), THEN A DEFROST FAILURE HAS OCCURED. THERE ARE THREE COMPONENTS IN THE DEFROST CIRCUIT. THE CONTROL, THE HEATER, AND THE BI-METAL. FIND THE DEFROST CONTROL AND SET TO DEFROST. IF THE HEATER COMES ON, THE CONTROL IS BAD. IF THE HEATER DOES NOT COME ON, EITHER THE HEATER OR THE BI-METAL IS BAD.
TO FIND THE BI-METAL, FOLLOW ONE SIDE OF THE HEATER WIRE FROM THE HEATER TO A SMALL ROUND DISC WITH TWO WIRES COMING OUT OF IT. THAT IS THE BI-METAL.DETERMINE WHICH IS BAD WITH VOLTAGE OR RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS.
