yes, sounds like the noise is coming from inside the drum. it just in 1 spot that it kinda clanks. is there somthing between the stainless drum and the drum housing that could make this happen?

The paddles inside the drum snap in on some of those models. See if one is loose and post back to me.

    is that inside the stainless?

  • jason Dec 03, 2012

cause ther is a dryer on top that dont really want to take off if i dont have to0

NO, you can check it from inside. This model may not have the snap in paddles.

SOURCE: Kenmore spin cycle thumping noises

I just went through the same issue with my Kenmore front loading washing machine. I assumed (and a Sears repairman also told me) that it is the bearings. After I took the drum assembly out, I saw the rear drum broken and the inner tub hitting the outer tub. I ordered the outer drum assembly and only when I took the inner drum assembly out I realized the the "Spider" attached to the inner drum (and spindle) was broken. Entire drum assembly cost $417 + shipping and it may be cheaper in the long run to buy a new washer. I like the front loaders because they save water and good for the environment, but the US manufacturers have not yet perfected the technology like European manufacturers (or they don't want the machines to last too long just like cars). Anyway, I am looking into welding the spider tomorrow. If not will return the outer tub assembly and buy a top loading washer for $300!

What could be the cause of loud thumping during spin?

Sounds like one of the balancing springs either broke or came off.

The washer is a Kenmore, front load style, from 2003.I would like to know if I really need to replace my washer, or a repair is feasible at all.

Have a service engineer to come and have a look and assess the extent of the problem, depending on the issue he will be in a position to tell you.
After that it depends on how old it is etc...

Possible fault with the main program controller unit, needs a replacement if the wiring and the controller panel is seen to be in order.

The tub makes loud thumping noises and seems to drop several times during a wash with very loud thumps and moves the machine.

The shaft that holds the drum sounds like its shifted or gotten bent (sometimes due to moving home, or overloading the machine)

One way to fix this is to open the unit and try to bend the shaft back to an equal kilter, but bending it back won't fix the problem forever, as the metal will now be weakened an d washing machines have fantastic G-force when spinning so weak metal won't keep forever,

but if you have your model number you can always get a replacement shaft and fit it yourself so its like new.

Hope this helps you.

Loud banging/thumping during spin cycle on my kenmore front load

this sounds like this could be the bearings,to check for this, open door and with yourhand lift the inner chrome drum and let it fall then lift again and if you feel a knocking sound and a lot of play in it then its the bearings,i know there should be movement in the drum but this will feel more of a knocking.

AWM 8163 Whirlpool washing machine

hi there,

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping/or sound
during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and
redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.
