Mtd engage blades it smokes and make noise

Hello- Just received a MTD lawn mower/tractor 42 inch with the bagger. Just put a new battery in and cranks runs good. When i go to engage the blade, the front fills with smoke and smells like burning rubber/makes a winney noise, and then i disengage...any ideas, belts are on, seem a bit loose, but im not sure they should be ultra tight

Have you physically moved each blade by hand (with the machine shut-off),spark plug disconnected to see if both or all of the cutting blades move freely if there is any binding you probably have a bad blade spindle bearing . If those move o.k. then you're going to want to check the pulleys on top of the deck, one of these which do not go to the blades may possibly have a bad bearing and is not moving freely causing the belt to be burning up.

Thanks Rick, I tried to move the blades and was not successful, the mower was sitting outside for 2 years under a cover, but i no the belt is loose as well.. but perhaps i can try to free up the blades first..thanks a billion

Matthew i hope your lucky enough to be able to free the blade spindle, somestyle spindles will have a grease fitting either on the sidoof the spindle housing or it may be on the top of the spindles drive belt pulley if you can get some grease in with a grease gun you might get lucky and free it up however if it feels rough or course sounding you're probably going to need to change them

SOURCE: I have a 42" mtd lawn tractor. The blades do not

The blades engage via a belt, that goes around a series of pullies, one of those pullies is a tension pulley that is connected to your pto lever by springs, the engine has nothing to do with your blades until after you engage the lever, I would check your belt. It could be loose, and if you engage the blades it could take it a few to get up to speed, thus making it seem like its only when the engine is warm.
Does everything else work fine? As in the tractor moves when the blades are not engaged?

Mower belt will not engage ?

First is to check the belt diagram and make sure your belt is on the correct side of the engagement pulley. This would be the one on the left side of deck with a spring attached.

Deck belt does not engage blades on riding tractor

Be sure the belt is the correct size and is routed correctly.

If you are not sure, you can download a manual here:
http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/public/list.jsp

You will need the model & serial numbers.
