Open Device Manager, you didn't say which OS?, open sound devices, update driver: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3957664&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3957663&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2095

a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

hi im wesley. try re-installing the drivers for the audio as the red sign normally means either it is broken or the drivers have crashed if its broken however you will have to get a new sound card its also very cheap.

Press the Windows key on the Keyboard and then press the "R" key while holding down the Windows key to open the Run dialog box.
Then, type "msinfo32" in the Run dialog box and click OK to open the System Information window.
On the left pane, click on the plus sign next to the "Components" then click on the Sound devices to check if the Window is able to recognize the audio card installed in the Computer.
If there is no audio device information available in the System Information window then the issue may be with the audio card.
To ensure if the issue is with the audio card, you may try reinstalling Windows.
If the issue still exist even after reinstalling Windows then you may contact the service center of the computer's manufacturer to get the audio card replaced with a compatible one.
