Question about Invacare Health & Beauty

Invacare XTR : Fully charged (batteries and charger fine) but motor keeps cutting out. Any ideas?

I was on a short run in very cold weather. The chair was left outside for about 2 hrs, but started no problem. I made a further call, chair was inside with me, but cut out every few yards. Have no idea why, but am very worried.

Going from very cold to warm inside could cause condensation to build on interior electronics or motors. the electronics are NOT water proof and susceptible to dampness like fog and sudden changes in humidity like outside to inside drawing moisture into components. let it set a while and and see if still problems call manufacturer

SOURCE: Jet 3 Ultra won't charge

Indeed, you need to find a repair shop. Try a google search for power chair repair, or ask your local hospital or if you can find one a power chair store. Most likely, you have a mechanical failure of the wiring, the battery themselves, or corrosion on the battery posts. Since the chair lights up when the charger is in, it is unlikely that the charger is broken. You may have a failure of the controller board, but that is also unlikely. And batteries do not usually suddenly fail completely; they typically fail slowly, losing the ability to completely charge.

I assume that you did not see a great deal of fluid leaking out of the battery container; you might look in the container and check to see if a battery is cracked or missing fluid.

Yes, the main controller module can be very expensive to replace. I would take it to a reputable dealer if the battery replacement does not help.

You will need to take it in for repair. 8 bar flash usually means you have a bad joystick/controller. They can sometimes send it in to the manufacturer to have it repaired. Find a reputable dealer and relay this info to them.

Contact the person who sold him the battery as it is under warranty. That person should be able to check out that battery for you.

Joe See my tips on charging batteries No you don't have to leave the chair on when charging. Charge overnite after using it during the day. Always have the charger off when plugging it into the chair and unplugging from the chair. The charger you have doesn't have an on/off switch so get a power strip with the on/off switch, plug that into the wall and plug your charger into the strip use the switch on the strip to turn the charger on and off this will save you having to plug and unplug the charger rom the wall. Always store or put the chair up fully charged. If you don't use the cair daily charge at least once a week. It takes 9-10 chargings to get the batteries operating at 100% so use the chair and charge overnight while you sleep Never leave the charger on the chair more than 12 hours Hope this helps you

Chair is slowing down. Batteries are fully charged.

How old are the batteries? Even fully charged older batteries can be weaker and not give you as much power to keep the speed at what you are used to. Now a dragging bake can cause you to go slower and also drag the batteries down quicker. Try driving the chair and after awhile check each motor to see if they feel overly warm or hot If one or both feel very warm or hot then I would have the brake or brakes checked If they seen ok I would get the batteries replaced

Do not know if chair is taking a charge lights just keep moving across armrest .how do u tell when fully charged?

hi let me see if i can help ,

When the lights go back and forth on your joystick that means the chair knows its pluged in .Now the chair itself has a built in charger that is mounted on the back of your chair .The back of the chair ,there is a opening a cutout in the frame .when you plug in your chair there will be a red light and a yellow ,yellow means the chair is charging, wait till it turns green, this means fully charged. When you plug in the chair youll see the lights through that hole.Look for the lights.

I recommend my customers to leave there chair charging over night look at the light it will be green when you turn the chair on the joystick should show fully charge.

Good luck hope i was of some help.

Randal the problem sounds like a battery issue. If after charging you get a green light on the charger and the batteries run down quickly there is one or both of the batteries that is weak and cannot handle the load required by the motors. If Medicare paid for your chair contact the provider that sold you your chair and ask them to come replace the batteries. They should then bill Medicare for the batteries. Hope this helps

imwaltz Sorry buddy but if it sat that long the batteries are probably too low for the charger to pick up and charge. to bad you didn't just charge those batteries once a month while you were laid up. You will have to get new batteries. If Medicare paid for your chair they will pay for most of the repair costs. Contact Repair Xpress @ 1-877-581-3733 or Roadrunner Mobility @ 1-800-467-2668 these are 2 excellent service companies that will bill Medicare for repair and have a tech repair the chair for you. Hello, i have a invacare wheelchair that has 2 12v sealed batteries, wired in series at 24v. I wanted to find out the charge plug has 3 prongs, which should be -. ground, . over vice versa, how come there...

Salty The charger detects the batteries when it is plugged into the charger port. With the older chargers you could measure the output of the charger by measuring across the two outter pins. With the newer chargers there is no output until the charger is plugged into the charger port. Now on the M51 you should have an on-board charger and the cord plugs into the back of the chair into a three pronged plug. Now if you plug the on-board charger into the wall socket and look at the rear of the chair low to the ground you should be able to see a red and yellow light (red and green when fully charged). With this charger plugged in you can take a digital voltmeter set it on 200 v dc and plug the leads into the two outter holes in the charger port under the front of the joystick you should read 27-30 volts when charging and 24-27 volts fully charged and the charger unplugged. Hope this helps you

Jo, nope you are safe. Most of the chargers are designed to cut off and go into trickle charge once they sense that the batteries are fully charged. The problem with overcharging comes after 18 hours or so. You should never leave the charger plugged into the chair for more than 24 hours. On the M51 the charger is built into the chair so just plug it in when you go to bed and unplug it when you get up and you'll be ok. You can check for full charge by looking at the charger there should be a red light and a green light when fully charged. Hope this helps
