HP 5550 stops in middle of job

A window says that the black print cartridge is not compatible with the printer.  But it is the correct number (56) and it was working fine till it stopped, so it has ink.

Inkjet printers have the major disadvantage of having often having clogged print head cartridges that can be very annoying in the long run. Though advanced inkjets might possess their automatic print head cleaning process, this might not work every time. The problem might be because a layer of thick ink might have blocked the holes of the printer’s head.
There are some useful ways to get the printer’s head clean without halving to buy another cartridge.
Solution 1
Once you remove the ink cartridge from the printer, you can make use of the Isopropyl Alcohol, and put at maximum of 10 drops in the ink cartridge. You will find a hole there, in which the ink usually runs from the ink cartridge to the head of the printer. When done, you can put the cartridge back in the printer and run the auto cleaning process from the printer’s option in order to clean the blocked holes of the cartridge. I would suggest you to run print tests first and once you are satisfied with the results, you can start using the printer normally.
Solution 2
Using a syringe and some alcohol to unblock the holes can also be very effective.

  • Step 1: Remove the cartridge from the computer
  • Step 2: With the syringe, take in some alcohol and put in some drops in the tiny hole where the ink runs from the ink cartridge to the head of the printer.
  • Step 3: When done, put the cartridge (only where the tiny holes are found) in some warm water. If some ink runs in the water, it means that the holes have been unblocked.
  • Step 4: Hence, let the alcohol act for 20 minutes on the ink before putting the cartridge back in the printer.
  • Step 5: Run some test prints before using the printer normally.

Note: I would suggest you to do an automatic head cleaning each time before any printing task. Hence it will reduce the risk of having the print heads blocked by dried ink.

Just remove the cartridges clean the brown dotted circuit of the cartridge and reinsert the carttridges and check if it gives the same error.it is quite possible that the cartridge needs replacement.as the circuit of the cartridge is gone faulty.

Try cleaning the cartridge sensor inside the ink carriage, use isopropyl alcohol and cotton to do this.

If that did not work, then the printer new cartridge has a defective chip, take it back to the retailer.

The sensor is the metal plate contact inside the ink slot, on the printer, just clean it with cotton tips and alcohol, if that is not a problem, then usually it is a faulty cartridge

I have an HP 5550 printer. The Ink Cartridge light continually blinks (and nothing prints) when I have both the colored and black cartridges installed. When I remove the black cartidge, it works fine and...

More than likely you have either a defective 56 (black) cartridge or it's empty. If you have Windows XP you may go to control panel and select printers and then right click to get to properties and preferences. From one of those you can get maintenance and attempt to do a clean and see if that works. If you have a cartridge refiller in your area take the cartridge to them and get it weighed....they'll know if it's empty or not by the weight. If you're lucky enough to have a kitchen scale that weighs in gms then weigh it yourself...if it's empty then it will problem be in the mid 20's vs. mid to upper 30s when it's full. EBAY has lots of 56 cartridges for sale and they will usually work just fine. The tri-color ones are more of a crapshoot.

Hp clj 5550 not printing cyan

Check the black cover on the pick up assembly under the cyan cartridge. If it is only a fraction too high cyan will not print. Make sure it is clipped in place correctly.

Hp 5550 deskjet not printing

This is typical cartridge problem.Which cartridge changed? This printer can print with the only one cartridge inside it, whatever which.Try this: Open cover put out color cartridge then close cover. If blinking stops replace color cartridge. If blinking continues put out black cartridge and put in color. If blinking stops replace black cartridge, if not stop replace both cartridges.
If this not help your printer has problem in carriage unit and need repair.

'58' should only be used with 'photo' paper, '57' is for everyday use.

Do you happen to be getting this on a Mac? I'm wondering if this is the Mac's notification for your cartridge being too out of ink to print. I came across this error today and had to replace the cartridge to fix the problem (mind you with the exact same version, just new).
